Nine days ago she was taken sick with pneumonia and despite the efforts of physicians, grew rapidly worse until her death came to her relief. The Iowa Democrat, Thursday, February 4, 1909 Mrs. Dennis Shea died at her home in this city at 11 o'clock last night. Nine days ago she was taken sick with pneumonia and despite the efforts of physicians, grew rapidly worse until her death came to her relief. Funeral services will be held at Immaculate Conception church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. The deceased was a native of Ireland and was 57 years of age. The family have been residents of Cherokee a good many years. Deceased was the mother of 7 children, five of whom, with her husband survive her. One son, Patrick, died some twenty years ago, and a daughter Mrs. Maurice Waul, died in South Dakota two years ago. The other children are all here except Frank, who is in the hospital in Washington, where he recently underwent an operation. To the family the sympathy of all is extended in their time of sudden bereavement. Dennis and Nora Shea were the parents of Mary Ellen, Mrs. Maurice Waul, Patrick, John Micheal, Frank, Catherine, Mrs. William Bowen, William Joseph and Thomas Edward. Family records indicate Dennis and Honora were born in Ireland; perhaps in the same area; came to America separately perhaps 1864; met in the Chicago Irish community; were perhaps married in the Fall of 1870; first child Mary Ellen was born July, 1871. Honora's death certificate shows her father as John Burke, born in Ireland. The 1885 Iowa census shows Dennis and Hannah, both age 40, with seven children, Mary (14), Patrick (12), John (11), Frank (11), Catherine (7), William (5) and Thomas (1) living in Fort Dodge. Their surname was spelled Shay. Dennis was a railroad man, employed by the Illinois Central Railroad stationed in Council Bluffs, Fort Dodge and lastly Cherokee. The 1900 US census shows Dennis Shea born June, 1843 and his wife Honora born May, 1850, both in Ireland and then living in Cherokee. They arrived in America during the 1860's, married about 1870 and raised seven children. Patrick preceded his parents in death. Their other children were John Michael, an electrician, Kate, a school teacher, Sergeant Major Frank was career military. Other children were William J., engineer on the Illinois Central railroad and Thomas E. Shea, Chicago and Northwestern Railway. Her 18 year old son Patrick Shea died in 1890 (Memorial #37460258) and is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery next to his parents. The exact date and circumstances of his death remain a family mystery. Patrick John Shea was born January 23, 1873 and baptized February 9, 1873. The sponsors are Daniel Burke and Honora Fitzpatrick. The post is from Saint Francis Xaverius Church records from 1855 - 1873. The church is now St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1 Bluff Street, Council Bluffs, Iowa.
