Crouch, one of the best known and most highly esteemed pioneer residents of the county and an honored veteran of the civil war, passed away at his home, 903 Crawford Street, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Mr. Crouch had been in poor health for several years, mainly as the result of his severe experiences and suffering during his service in the war which impaired his health to such an extent that he never regained it; yet he kept bravely and patiently on at his duties without complaining. After leaving the farm and moving to Boone he took up the work of rural mail carrier and as all the patrons on his route will gladly attest, Uncle Sam never had a more faithful servant, just as he never had a more faithful soldier during the war. Some time ago his health became so poor that he was obliged to give up this work, but still with indomitable courage he would not give up. He engaged in business in a small way in Boone, which he conducted for several months. About six months ago he was stricken with paralysis and was then forced to retire. This paralysis, together with rheumatism and general infirmities of old age finally resulted in death. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2:00 o'clock from the First M.E. church. The services were conducted by the Rev. G.D. Crissman and the church was well filled with sorrowing friends come to pay a last tribute of esteem to one whom they had known and loved in life. The Rev. Crissman delivered a most touching and consoling sermon and a quartette sang several beautiful and appropriate selections. The bier and pulpit were literally banked with beautiful floral offerings, mute tokens of esteem of all who knew him. The ladies of the W.R.C. and W.C.T.U. and member of J.G. Miller Post, G.A.R., were present in a body and served as a guard of honor to the remains. At the the close of the religious services the members of the post rendered their beautiful service. The funeral cortege, in automobiles then escorted the remains to Linwood Park cemetery, where they were consigned to their last resting place. Horace B. Crouch was born in Penfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, June 22, 1839 and died at his home in Boone Iowa July 25, 1915, in his 77th year. His early life was spent at home with his parents and at the age of twenty three years he enlisted in the civil war as a member of the Merrill horse (Michigan) battalion. Later he became a corporal in Company L, Second Missouri Cavalry and at the time of his discharge he was a member of Co. H, Fourteenth Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps. On June 29, 1976 he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah J. Congran. To Mr. and Mrs. Crouch were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. One daughter, Jessie, died Nov. 10, 1902 at the home here and two daughters, Blanche, wife of J.W. Leesing, and Alice, died in Colorado within two days of each other, Dec. 9 and Dec. 11, 1909 respectively. He is survived by his wife and one son, Harry Crouch, of Nevada, Iowa and two sisters, Mrs. Will Gleason of Berkley, California, and Mrs. Simeon Seamans of Hemet, California. On account of their advanced ages and the great distance the sisters were unable to come for the funeral. Mr. Crouch had been a Christian and a member of the Methodist church from childhood. On coming to Boone County he transferred his membership to the Marion Street M.E. church and later to the Prairie Center church which he was largely instrumental in organizing and maintaining. When he moved to Boone he transferred to the First M.E. church of this city and remained a faithful and devoted member until his death. As the Rev Chrissman well said in his sermon theirs was truly a Christian home. The writer taught for many terms at the Prairie Center school house nearby their home east of the city. All of the children of the family were our pupils and by their conduct and demeanor at all times thoroughly exemplified the true value of a Christian home. Mr. Crouch was also a loyal patron of the school and gave us great encouragement in our work. It was also our pleasure and privilege to visit the Crouch home on various occasions and there we witnessed the true beauty and innate Christian charity and loving kindness of parents and children, also the hearty and courteous welcome and greeting to the stranger within their gates. The world has been better off Mr. Crouch having lived in it and we will all miss his kindly, encouraging smile and greeting. The world is poorer but heaven is richer.
