Horace Holmes was born at Jackson, Tioga Co., Penn., June 15, 1841. At the age of 8 years he, with his parents, removed to Plainfield, Wis. On Aug. 21, 1862 he enlisted in the United States Army, Company G. 30th Regiment, Wisconsin volunteers and was in service for three years and three months. August 23, 1868 he was married to Elizabeth Ann Ingle at Plainfield, Wis., where he, with his wife, pursued the occupation of farming, until they moved to Creighton in 1886. For many years, Mr. Holmes, together with his son, conducted the "Holmes Livery" with an equipment superior to any livery in this part of the state and a service equal to perfection in efficiency. Later they disposed of the livery business and began farming and stock raising and the same plane of superiority was followed in the undertaking until a year or two ago, when they moved back to town and Mr. Holmes retired from activity in the affairs. Mr. Holmes was known as a man, who lived an active life, nor was his finer attributes unnoticeable. It was a particular obsession of his to avoid cruelty to animals and to treat them with every kindness, yet to discipline them. He was particularly noticeable of children and his thoughts for them were often coupled with kindly greetings and pleasurable gifts. "Hod" Holmes was a fair and square man and his dealings with fellowmen always carried with it a commanded respect for the manner in which he dealt. His passing by death on March 6, 1919 removes from this community a man, who was regarded with esteem by his every acquaintance. He is survived by his widow, one son, Henry of Creighton and one daughter, Mrs. Stella Brown of Greeley, Colorado, all of whom were with him when he died. One daughter had preceded him in death. The funeral was held from the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment made in Greenwood cemetery. Rev. Bishop of the Baptist church officiating. ...The Creighton News 13 March 1919
