Read More	From the Gladwin County Record --- February 11, 1998 HOWARD DELOS McKIMMY Howard McKimmy, 67, of Beaverton, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998 at his home after a short illness. Born Nov. 9, 1930 in Beaverton, he was the son of Clayton and Hazel (Smith) McKimmy of Beaverton. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. He worked in machinery maintenance at Robinson Industry in Coleman, retiring in 1992 after 35 years. He also farmed and was a member of the Beaverton Church of the Brethren. Howard married the former Bonnie Dennison, Oct. 17, 1953 in Gladwin. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, David of Midland and Toby of Flint; two daughters, Ellen and husband Patrick Kent of DeWitt, a nd Teresa and husband Javian Coats of Gladwin; seven sisters, Alice Mayer and May Covey of California; Margaret Pietras of Shields, Iola Whitehead of Arizona, Helen Fry, June Havens, and Mildred King, all of Beaverton; one grandson, Lyle Noel Coats of Gladwin; and several nieces and nephew s. He was preceded in death by one sister, Muriel, and four brothers, Herbert, Ronald, John and Milford. Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Brethren in Beaverton with Rev. Kenn Golay officiating. Burial was in Tobacco Township (Dale) Cemetery in Beaverton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Brethren building fund or Hospice of Gladwin County. From the Gladwin County Record --- June 14, 1972 OLD BEAVERTON LOG HOME TO BE RECONSTRUCTED AT NATURE CENTER By Margaret Lloyd Record Correspondent Mr. and Mrs. Howard McKimmy, of Beaverton, recently donated their hewn log cabin to the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland. "The cabin will be torn down as soon as possible, "according to Fel Brinett from the center, "and we will salvage what we can use in reconstructing a homestead farm." The story and a half cabin, located at the corner of VanDyke and Dundas Roads in Tobacco Township, was purchased by Clayton McKimmy, Howard'sfather, from Gyra Crockett in 1926. The cabin is known to have been standing long before that, "It was here before 1900," McKimmy noted. The well known landmark stands just south of what was once known as " Pine Stump Corner." the "corner" was located at Dundas Road and "Old State Road" that once connected Pinconning and Beaverton. Location of the old road can be still seen, though it has grown over, along the line of trees winding along the ridge north of the McKimmy farm buildings. Public notices concerning township, county and school affairs, were posted on a Pine stump at the juncture of the roads so area residents gathered there to read and discuss the events of the day. The stump and road have long been gone but the name still lives on. The McKimmys have tried to find out how old the cabin is but have been unable to as yet. One of the two original abstracts on the land shows it was purchased from the State in 1854. McKimmy and the three youngest children of the Clayton McKimmy family were born in the cabin. The senior McKimmy was a farmer, and even through the depression made a good living for the 12 children on the farm, McKimmy noted. "All of us graduated from the Beaverton High School," he noted with pride. The children began their education in one room Dundas School, close to their home. McKimmy, in remembering about family life in the cabin with 14 members in the family, said the second floor was divided into two dormitory like rooms, "one for the boys and one for the girls." Their parents slept in what appears today to be a very small bedroom but for the era, was more than adequate. The cabin has deteriorated in the years since it was lived in. McKimmy began buying the farm from his father in 1950, brought his bride to the cabin almost 19 years ago, and lived there until they built their new home adjacent to the cabin about 13 years ago. Nature Center personnel and volunteers have begun initial work at the site and have discovered the old cabin is well constructed of very fine lumber in the interior. It is hoped that most of the cabin can be used in reconstructiong the homestead house at the center that will be part of a complete farm that will consist of a log barn and attached shed housing period farm equipment. Other buildings will include a smoke house, root cellar and privy. The farm will be reconstructed to meet with all Midland fire ordinances, they said. The center would appreciate any donations of buildings and furnishings for the farm that date from the late Empire or early Victorian periods. McKimmy said, Following our decision to donate the cabin my brohters and sisters are as enthusiastic about leaving the family home to such a community project, as we are." The family hopes it will give many generations both enjoyment of seeing the past and that it will be used as an educational aid to children and adults alike. With the recruitment of a lot of volunteers and a lot of field work plus donations, it is hoped the CNC willl have a complete homestead farm of the 1870 era to further advance the learning center.
