Howard Gerald Leapley was born October 7, 1911, on a farm near Coleridge, to Howard Albert and Nora Faye (Seyl) Leapley. The family moved to Belden to make it easier for Gerald to get to school. Gerald graduated in 1929 and attended National Business Training School, Sioux City, Iowa. Then he worked in the office of International Milling Company, Sioux City, for several years. Returning to Belden, he was engaged in farming until enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in September 1942. While stationed at Tucson, Arizona, Gerald married Eunice Aldra Schwedhelm February 9, 1944. Gerald was discharged on January 23, 1946, as a Statistical Non Commissioned Officer. After his discharge, they returned to Belden where he was appointed Rural Mail Carrier March 1, 1946. He also carried mail out of the Laurel Post Office from 1962 until his retirement June 30, 1972 with 30 years and seven months service. The couple then moved to Laurel. Gerald was a member of the Masonic Lodge #248, Eastern Star, Laurel, and was treasurer of the Laurel Senior Citizens Center for 16 years. He had served on the Belden School Board, Belden Volunteer Fire Department, and was a 66-year member of the Belden American Legion. He was also an Elder of the Presbyterian Church. Gerald is survived by his wife, Eunice; two sons, Roger (Cheryl) Leapley, Mesquite, Nevada, and Kevin (Bobbi Janda) Leapley, York; and three grandsons, Alan Leapley, Jason Leapley and Michael Leapley. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Crystal.
