Howard was born on October 9, 1923, in Spencer, South Dakota, to Thomas J. Franey and Grace (Haas) Franey. He married the love of his life, Madge G. Fiscus, on August 28, 1949. Read More	Howard Franey, 92, of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Woodlands Place Rehabilitation Suites in Denison, TX. Howard was born on October 9, 1923, in Spencer, South Dakota, to Thomas J. Franey and Grace (Haas) Franey. He married the love of his life, Madge G. Fiscus, on August 28, 1949. Howard and Madge were happily married for 64 years. Howard entered the U.S. Navy after high school. He attended basic training in Farragut, Idaho, and then was stationed in San Francisco, California. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific Ocean. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he began working for Standard Oil Company as a bulk oil distributor in Mount Vernon, South Dakota, where they lived before moving to Spencer, South Dakota. Standard Oil Company transferred Howard and his growing family to Elk Point, South Dakota, where they lived the rest of their lives. He was very proud to have worked for Standard Oil Company for 35 years until he retired. Howard and Madge enjoyed many years camping in Texas and Louisiana during the winter months. During those winter months, they took square dancing lessons and enjoyed the many friends they made over the years on their camping travels. Howard dearly loved spending time with his four children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He also enjoyed golfing, watching sports, gardening, and at the age of 90, he had a renewed interest in camping with family and friends his grown children, grandchildren, great-grandson, and friends at the age of 90. Howard was very honored and proud to be selected to participate in the South Dakota Honor Flight for World War II veterans to be and was flown to Washington, D.C. He also proudly served as a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. Howard is survived by his children, Constance (Bruce Chapman) Franey of Washington, Missouri; Gary Franey of Elk Point, South Dakota; and Harold (Rebecca) Franey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his grandchildren, Adam (Katie Bode) Franey of Arthur, North Dakota; Neil Chapman of Washington, Missouri; Ashley Franey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Megan (Philip) (Phillip) Thomas of Durant, Oklahoma; and Garrett Franey of Denison, Texas; his great-grandson, Luke Thomas of Durant, Oklahoma; his sisters-in-laws, Mary Franey of Mitchell, South Dakota; Marian Fiscus of Omaha, Nebraska; Arlene Fiscus of Bozeman, Montana; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. Franey and Grace (Haas) Franey; his wife, Madge G. Franey; his daughter, Susan Franey; his brother, Joe Franey; his sister, Irene Clark, his brother, Norman Franey, and his sister, Luella Haiar. [Courtesy: Kober Funeral Home]
