Melton was next called. He said he had lived in San Bernardino about five years; he is secretary and treasurer of hose company No. 2, the hose house of which is on Ninth and F streets; the witness had known Mr. Jessrang ever since he has been in this city; he is also a member of hose company No. 2; on the 1st of each month the witness pays each member of the company at the rate of $1 per hour for all fires during the month; at the time of the October settlement Jessrang asked if the one that was paid him was all that was due him, and on being answered yes, he said he would get even next month, that he got in on some fires down town. (Col. 5) Howard Melton was called and testified as follows: I was a member of the fire department on the night of the Holcomb fire; I was at the fire; was holding the nozzle with Mr. Jessrang when he was arrested; Mr. Berryman helped me on the nozzle. The funeral is being postponed to await the arrival of a brother who resides in that city.
