He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1968. Early in his adult life, he worked ar Superior Ideal and then Mahaska Bottling companies in Oskaloosa. Later he was a custodian at Grant Elementary School for over 10 years.Howard presently worked at the Oskaloosa Wal-Mart store for the past 16 years. He was also involved in the Oskaloosa Little League program for 31 years. He enjoyed attending the races at the Southern Iowa Speedway: the Iowa Hawkeyes: and decorating his home and yard for Christmas. His family includes his wife, Lois Gilchrist of Oskaloosa; a son and his wife, Patrick and Shawna Gilchrist, Oskaloosa; a daughter: Heidi Gilchrist of Oskaloosa; 3 grandchildren: P>J> and Zack LeMaire, and Dallas Glenn Gilchrist; his mother; Marilyn Lee of Oskaloosa; and a half sister and her husband: Shirley and Martin Carrizalez of Aurora, Illinois. Howard was preceded in death by his father; a brother: Marion Gilchrist; and two sisters: Gertrude Gilchrist and Sandra Gibson. Funeral services for Howie Gilchrist will be held Wednesday November23. 2005, at 10 a.am. in the First Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa with the Reverend David Childers and Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Tuesday after 3 p.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Little League program.
