She was born September 1, 1951, and early on was adopted by Glen and Viola Kelderman Groenenboom. Gilchrist, 58, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She was born September 1, 1951, and early on was adopted by Glen and Viola Kelderman Groenenboom. Lois graduated from the North Mahaska High School with the class of 1969, and furthered her education at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa and earned her culinary arts degree in 1971. On August 19, 1972, she was united in marriage to Howard Gilchrist at Oskaloosa, and he died November 19, 2005. Early in her adult life, she worked at Oskaloosa Produce and later was a nurse aide at the Mahaska County Hospital. Following the birth of her children, Lois stayed at home and cared for her family. She had been a very active member of the First Church of the Nazarene, loved singing in the choir, and participating in the Live Nativity Christmas pageants and Hope Dinners. She enjoyed artwork, and camping and attending the Iowa State Fair. Lois loved animals of all kinds. Her family includes her son: Patrick Glen Gilchrist of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Heidi Dawn Gilchrist of Oskaloosa; and a grandson: Dallas Gilchrist; her mother in law, Marilyn Lee of Oskaloosa, and a sister in law: Shirley Carrizalez of Aurora, Illinois. Besides her husband, Lois was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services for Lois Gilchrist will be held Monday, August 24, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, with Reverend David Childers officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Sunday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 1 – 3 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter or the children's ministries at the First Church of the Nazarene. Bates Funeral Chapel
