Howard William Keck, son of Edger Allen and Cora Pearl Huddleston Keck was born January 5, 1910 on a farm northwest of Crofton and died Friday, Aug. 23 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, at the age of 75 years, seven months and 18 days. He received his elementary education at West Blyville School near Crofton. He attended Laurel High School, where he graduated in 1926. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in Education degree and a major in Agricultural Education. He taught in a rural school one year following graduation. On June 4, 1933 Howard was united in marriage to Mary Mildred Merchen at the Methodist Church in Wayne. To this union five children were born Darrell, Doris, Janet, Curtis and Linda. Following his marriage he taught one year at the Dolphin School near Crofton. He then taught Vocational Agriculture at Genoa for three years and at Wakefield for three years. He moved to Creighton in 1940, where he started a new Vocational Agriculture program. He taught Agriculture in Creighton High School until 1952, when he began teaching Veterans agriculture classes at Creighton and agri business in Creighton dealing in seeds, feeds, fertilizer and farm supplies. In 1967 he sold his business and worked as a city clerk for the city of Creighton. In 1965 he began working for the Farmers Home Administration Service as a loan officer--first in Antelope County and then in Knox County. Howard and Mary lived at Creighton until 1971, when the FHA office was moved from Center to Bloomfield, where they lived until Howard's death. Howard was a pioneer in production of hybrid seed corn in Nebraska. He and his brothers-in-law produced Nebraska Certified Seed beginning in 1938 near Crofton. He moved the operation to Creighton and continued to produce Nebraska Certified Hybrids. Howard served many years on the City Council at Creighton. He was instrumental in startling a Farm and Grain Show at Creighton, which was held annually for many years. Howard was baptized and joined the Methodist Church in Genoa in May 1935. He was a member of the United Methodist church and served numerous positions, including church treasurer, lay leader and administrative board member. He was an active member of Masonic Lodge 218. He was also a member of Yankton Consistory. When his daughter, Janet and son-in-law, Max, were killed in separate auto accidents in 1969, their three daughters, Theresa, Julia and Amy, ages four, two and one, respectively, were received into Howard and Mary's home and raised as their own children. Theresa and Julia are presently attending Wayne State College and Amy is a senior at Bloomfield High School. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Darrell of Plainview and Curtis of Creighton; two daughters, Doris Montgomery of Royal and Linda Martinez of Walnut Creek, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; three great grandchildren, one brother, Roy of Crofton, one sister, Velma Teften of Bloomfield.
