"Obituary: Howell Burley Belt Howell Burley Belt was born on April 26, 1880, at Lincoln Nebraska, and departed from this life in his home at Red Deer, October 30, 1961, at the age of 81 years and six months. On June 24, 1903, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Adeline Stirling. To this union was born 9 children, 3 boys and six girls. Florence, Mrs. Burgoyne; Pauline, Mrs. Kelm; Rosa, Mrs. Chappell; Margaret, Mrs. Rangen; Ruth, Mrs. Burk; Roy and Donald. Two children pre-deceased him. In the year of 1907 he moved with his family from New Hartford, Iowa to Leedale, Alberta, where he homesteaded. He resided in the Leedale-Eckville district for 36 years. From here he moved to James River Bridge where he bought a farm and lived for ten years. From there he retired to Red Deer because of ill health. During the time he lived in the Leedale area, Mr. Belt was converted, while a tent meeting was being conducted by Rev. Bailey during the ministry of Rev. and Mrs. Baker. Mr. Belt was a faithful member of the United Missionary Church. He leaves to mourn their loss: Mrs. Belt, 5 daughters, 2 sons, 28 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters and 2 brothers, as well as many friends and other relatives." He also had one of the first threshing machines in the area. In 1916 the family moved to the Gimlet district where they farmed for a number of years. When their eldest son, Roy, took over the farm, they moved to James River Bridge in 1946. After their retirement, they lived for a time at Didsbury and later lived in Red Deer. Burley passed away in 1961 and Charlotte in 1969. Of their eight children Rosa, Pauline, and Margaret reside at Huntingdon, B.C.; Ruth lives in Red Deer, and Donald lives in Sundre."
