Daves of Atlanta; daughters, Beverly Hagerty of Chamblee and Mary Ann Stahlschmidt of Redmond, Wash.; brothers, Homer, Howard and Jesse Daves of North Carolina and James Daves of South Carolina; and sisters, Doris Turner and Elaine Whitaker of North Carolina and Patsy Long of South Carolina. Huber was born in Rutherford County Jan. 30, 1917, to Lala and James T. Daves, the second of nine children. The only college graduate in his family, Huber earned a degree in psychology from Berea College, Ken., in 1942, before entering the Army during World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India Theater, spending most of the war with Gen. Clair Chenault’s Flying Tigers in Kunming, China. He was a sergeant, but was awarded the honorary rank of captain while serving as an English instructor for the Chinese Nationalist pilot cadets. After the war, Huber married his college sweetheart, Joan Stephens, on June 1, 1948. He worked as a civilian personnel specialist for the Air Force for 33 years before retiring in 1982. He and his family moved to Chamblee in 1987. Huber was a lifetime devoted baseball fan. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including a number of championship teams. Huber will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother and friend, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Ellenboro. The body will be at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
