Deck, born Feb 17, 1900 at Abbyville KS, died May 5, 1982 at his home in Spokane, WA where he & his wife had lived the past 27 years. The Deck family was a moving family. They always say that "a rolling stone gathers no moss" but in all the Decks moving & living in different localities, they found out what a big difference there was in the farm soil in different areas & the different techniques used in farming such. They also made new acquaintances & life long friends wherever they settled. Before leaving Abbyville in 1920, the Decks lived one mile north of the cemetery on the Chester Deck farm; later they moved to what was known as 4 acres, (1st corner west of Abbyville & one fourth mile north.) For a period of time, while living in and around Abbyville, Leroy & Nona Deck, worked in the Christian Church congregation & helped with other community & church related activities. The children, Gladys, Hubert, Ronald, Hazel and Guy, attended the John Martin (Dist. 43) School. The Decks moved to Turon, & were residents of that area from 1920-1927. Feb. 25, 1926 Hubert married Ruby Straight. While in Turon, daughter Marilyn was born, Marilyn (Deck) Bunke preceded her father in death Sept. 13 1967. During the late 20's the Decks moved to Lane County. After the girls married & left home, it was customary for father Roy & sons Ronald & Hubert & their families to stay together. In the early 30's the 3 families moved to Utica in Grove County where Hubert's parents lived in a native stone house. The boys lived nearby as all three families were occupied in farming. A daughter Vada was born to Hubert & Ruby while living in Grove Co. Approximately in 1934 or 1935, all three families moved to Lebo, Kansas and again took up farming. Ronald & Hubert also began operating a filling station. Later they operated a filling station and grocery in Emporia where both of Hubert daughters, Marilyn & Vada attended High School. After one of Hubert's daughters (Vada) moved to Spokane WA, around 1955, Hubert & Ruby decided to move there too, where Hubert owned & operated a filling station until 1970 and was still in Spokane at the time of his death May, 6, 1982. His father Roy died Mar. 11, 1948; Ronald died Aug. 25, 1963; brother Guy died Sept. 14, 1963; sister Hazel (Deck) Mose also preceded him in death as well as mother Nona, Feb. 15, 1974. Survivors: widow, Ruby; daughter, Mrs. Vada Smith, Spokane; sister Gladys Dellenbach, Abbyville; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Spokane, 10:30 A.M., Sat. May 8, 1982.
