Read More	OBITUARY Hugh Campbell Mathers was born March 22. 1847. in a little old log cabin at Clear Creek, Indiana. He was the youngest or nine children, all of whom preceded him years ago. He was reared by Christian parents and at an early date In life united with the Christian church. When a boy he attended Sunday school every Sunday for five years and has always been a faithful member, although on account of his health he has not attended services for some time. At the age of seventeen he tried to enlist In the civil war and when asked how old he was answered: "Ain't I big enough?" And he was told he was. He served one year in the 47th Indiana. November 28, 1869, he was married to Miss Laura Shirley at Bloomington, Indiana, and to this union four children were born little Myrtle, who died at the age of four years, and B. L. Mathers, who passed away at his home near Gate eight years ago. Mr. Mathers was 71 years, 2 months and 22 days old. He passed away June 14th at the home of his daughter after weeks of suffering from Brights disease. All that loving hands could do for him was done. In the year 1878 H. C. Mathers left Indiana taking his beloved companion to Kansas, in hopes of her regaining her health, but she passed away July 11, the next year. As she bade them goodbye she said: "Take good care of the children," and to them: "You must be good children." He was poor in this world's goods but rich in the faith that God would help him raise them and keep them together. In 1898 he settled on a claim at Carmen, Oklahoma, his son Lee farming the place until 1904 when they moved to Gate. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Lee, a son, Harry, besides nieces and nephews and a great many friends to mourn his departure. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Martin of Buffalo, after which the body was taken to Benton, Kansas, where a large number of friends and relatives had gathered at the old church he had helped to build. There the funeral sermon was preached by the Christian minister of Potwin. The body was laid away in the Enterprise cemetery beside that of his wife and little daughter who had preceded him to the great beyond 39 years before. The floral offerings which were furnished by his nieces and nephews were indeed beautiful. [The Beaver Herald. (Beaver, O.T. [Okla.]), July 18, 1918]
