Jeffers received a message last Thursday from Osage, Canada, telling of the death of their son Hugh, of typhoid fever. It was indeed sad news to the family and the entire community felt the shock as he and his wife were so well known here. Hugh with his wife and family and brother Pirl left here last March for Osage, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he had purchased land and was going out with great hopes and prospects for the future but he was taken with disease and after a strong and hopeful battle succumbed and passed away on last Thursday. Their little daughter Violet is also a victim of typhoid and was taken to the hospital for treatment the day of her father's death and on this account the wife and mother was unable to accompany the remains of her husband here for burial. The remains were accompanied home by the brother Pirl arriving here Sunday morning and buried in the Altoona cemetery Sunday afternoon. Hugh was well known over this community and everyone sorrows and sympathizes with the young widow and children left far away in the north away from relatives but among friends as she writes that friends were very kind to them during his illness. His father and mother, brothers and sisters also have the sympathy of all. Hugh Elias Jeffers was born at Phillipps, Nebraska, June 16, 1881 and died at Osage, Canada, May 4, 1911, being 29 years, 11 months and 12 days old. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Jeffers of Altoona. He came with his parents to Altoona in 1902 and this has been his home from that time until this spring. Last March he in company with his family and brother Pirl, moved from here to Saskatchewan, Canada, where he had purchased land, in hopes to make that his future home. With alluring hopes and bright prospects for success, he went out having faith in the great West little knowing the briefness of his stay. About a week after their arrival there he became ill into what developed later a severe case of the typhoid fever which he bravely fought until the end. November 26, 1907, he was married to Edna V. Altman, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Altman, of Altoona. To this union were born two little girls, Violet Josephine and Wynona May, who are left to comfort the mother through the sad days of sorrow. There is also left to mourn his death Father and Mother Jeffers, three brothers, J. Clifford, of Milford, Utah, Earl of this place, and Pirl who was with his brother and accompanied the remains home, also four sisters living, Kitty, Celesta, Edith, Mrs, Belle Gifford, all residing here. All were present at the funeral, except J. Clifford, who was unable to reach here until the day following. When they lived in Nebraska he united with the Baptist church at the age of 17. After coming to Altoona he placed his membership with the Christian church. After the services the body was laid to rest at the Altoona Cemetery.
