Newman was born Oct. 15, 1908, one mile southwest of Stockport, the son of Walter Thomas and Bessie Johnston Newman. When he was 3 years old, his parents purchased a farm and moved three miles north of Stockport. He graduated from Stockport High School in 1928 and attended the Iowa Success Business College in Ottumwa for two years. He married Mildred T. Watkins of Stockport March 3, 1934, in Rock Island, Ill. They lived in Stockport for eight years and then moved to the Newman fram in 1942. He farmed until he worked at Iowa State Bank of Stockport as cashier from November 1957 to June 1972. He remained as vice president through 1976. He had been a director since 1949 and had been one of the original stockholders of the bank since Aprils 2, 1928, when it opened for business. Mr. Newman was a member of Stockport United Methodist Church; a charter member in 1958 and first president of the Stockport Liions Club. He received his 50-year pin from the Odd Fellows Lodge in Fairfield in 1978, and was a lifetime member of the Fairfield Elks Lodge, which he joined in 1942. The Newmans have resided in Fort Myers during the winter months since 1974. They reside at the family farm near Stockport during the summer. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ned D. of Long Beach, Fla., and Kriss D. of Des Moines; three grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Miner of Tallahassee, Fla.; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two children who died at birth.
