''''''''''''' Ulysses Dispatch (Ulysses, Nebr.), May 17, 1923, p. 1, col. 6 The Passing Of Hugh Kelly Mr. Hugh Kelly was born in County Leitrim in Ireland about 73 years ago and passed away at his home in Ulysses, May 6th, 1923. Deceased when quite young embarked from Ireland, on board "The Great Eastern," for Castle Garden, New York, where he landed in June 1861, a few years later going to Bloomington, Ill., where he was united in marriage to Miss Mary McGowan. Eleven children were born to them, six of whom together with his widow survive him. They are: Julia (Mrs. Wm. Geiger), Mary, Nellie, Nora, Susie and Lucy. Five preceded him to the Great Beyond. He is also survived by two sisters Mrs. Catherine Havey of Rosendale, Wisconsin, and Miss Bridget Kelly of Bloomington, Illinois. His brother Thomas passed away at Bloomington 7 weeks ago. Other relatives and many friends deplore his departure. Thirty-nine years ago Mr. and Mrs. Kelly came to Seward county where he engaged in farming until twelve years ago when they removed to Ulysses, where they have resided since. Mr. Kelly was possessed of an amiable and cheerful personality, his presence ever radiating good cheer and sunshine. He was very fond of children, many of whom called to visit him when he became unable to make his accustomed walks to town. He, as well as they enjoyed the little visits to the utmost. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly celebrated their golden wedding last January, the occasion being one of much happiness and rejoicing for the good couple so long residents of Nebraska. He had been in delicate health for several months past when he was compelled to keep within doors, where he passed the time quietly and pleasantly, surrounded by his loved ones. Three weeks prior to his going he became very weak but, realized that the thread of life was about to be severed, and spent the moments in prayer and pious mediatation. Surrounded by wife and children his life went out painlessly, and without struggle on May 6th. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning, May 8th, at St. Mary's church, his pastor Rev. Father Loughram, officiating at a Requiem High Mass after which he gave an impressive and explanatory sermon. Many friends and neighbors were present. Six nephews of the deceased acted as pall-bearers: John McGowan, George McGowan, Hugh Kelly, Dan Kelly, Thos. Gibb and George Gibb. The remains were laid to rest in the parish cemetery. ''''''''''''' p. 6, col. 3 RESOLUTIONS WHEREAS, to our great sorrow, Death has removed from our midst, neighbor Hugh Kelly, and when we realize this to be the inevitable law of nature, the eternal will of Divine Justice, which is God, yet as a brother and a neighbor great seems our loss and we bow our heads in sorrow. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That we tender our sympathy to the family in this, their hour of bereavement and be it RESOLVED: that these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the camp, the charter draped in mourning, and a copy be published in The Ulysses Dispatch, and a copy be transmitted to the family of the deceased neighbor.
