Read More	OBITUARY - ALTOONA HERALD, NOVEMBER 4, 1937 HUGH BARTON IS TAKEN SUDDENLY Altoona and community were deeply shocked and grieved last Saturday noon when the news was flashed abut town that Hugh Barton was dead. It was unbelievable to his friends and associates. He had been about town as usual Friday evening and went to his work, in the offices of the Bookey Packing Co. in Des Moines, Saturday morning. He was taken sick about 190 o'clock while at his work in the office and was rushed to the doctor's office where he died in a short time, before his wife and parents could be summoned. He was a fine clean young man only 28 years of age, with a bright and promising future and loved by all who knew him. His passing has removed a most estimable and upright young man and we all stand stunned that one so young and with everything ahead should be taken. He was Master of the Altoona Masonic lodge and had associated himself with the work of the order in many of the surrounding towns. A large number of Masons of the home lodge and others gathered to pay honor to their departed brother and Master. Hugh Lester Barton, second son of Frank and Verna Arrowood Barton, was born September 14, 1909, at Altoona, Iowa and departed this life, October 30, 1937, age 28 years, 1 month, 16 days. At the age of 12 years he united with the Christian church of Bondurant, Iowa, his home with his parents at that time. Later, returning to Altoona,he united with the Altoona Methodist Church where his life stands as a monument to the good living of his devoted family. From High School he went into training at the University of Commerce at Des Moines, Iowa, fitting himself for clerical work andholding a responsible position with the Bookey Packing Company of Des Moines at the time of his death. On July 31, 1934, he was united in marriage with Gretchen Gertrude Forbes, then of Des Moines, but formerly sharing with him years of childhood in the Altoona home town, school and church. The Reverend L.L. Smith, a former pastor who united these two in marriage, presented the sermon of consolation at the funeral service. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing, his wife, his parents, two brothers, Howard and Harold and his grandmother, Mrs. Agnes Barton, all of Altoona, and numerous relatives, friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge King David, Number 407, of Altoona, and at the time of his death was Master of the Lodge. In memory of a devoted husband and son, and for the consolation of the living, we turn to Whittier's poem and hymn, "Diadem": "When on my day of life the night is falling And, in the wind from unsunned spaces blown, I hear far voices out of darkness calling My feel to paths unknown; Thou, who has made my home of life so pleasant, Leave not its tenant when its walls decay; O Love Diving, O Helper ever present, Be Thou my strength and stay. Some humble door among Thy many mansions, Some sheltering shade where sin and striving cease, And flows, forever through Heaven's green expansions The river of Thy peace. There, from the music round about me stealing, I fain would learn the new and holy song, And find at last, beneath Thy trees of healing, The life for which I long" The funeral was held Monday afternoon November 1, 1937 at 2 o'clock from the Altoona Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. L.L. Smith, of Pacific Junction, Iowa, assisted by the pastor Rev. Fred B. Moore. The church was crowded to its utmost with sympathizing friends and relatives, many were unable to gain entrance. The front of the church was one mass of flowers and the casket was banked high with floral offerings of sympathy. C.J. Biddle, Pastor of the Christian Church, and a boyhood friend of the deceases, sand "Some Day We'll Understand" and "Shadows" accompanied by Mrs. George Phillips at the piano. Following the sermon, the Masonic service was given by Past Master C.W. Altman, after which the body was escorted by member of the Altoona lodge and many visiting brothers to the Altoona cemetery where it was consigned to the grave under the ritualistic service of the order. Relative who came from a distance were: Atty, and Mrs. L.L. Forbes and daughters, Enid and Shirley, of Mason City; a brother of Mrs. Barton; Dr. and Mrs. H.B. Frampton and daughter of Ramona, of Ft. Dodge, a sister of Mrs. Barton. Three uncles Mr. C.M. Forbes, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Forbes, of Jefferson, and Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Barton, of Cedar Rapids, an aunt Mrs. Williams, of Jefferson, also a cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Forbes, of Jefferson. ----------------------------------------- CARD OF THANKS Words cannot express our gratitude and appreciation of the kind attention, words of sympathy, and the many acts of assistance rendered, and the many many beautiful floral tributes given in remembrance of our beloved husband and son, who was so suddenly taken from us.
