Hulda was born February 27, 1914 to Moritz and Sarah (Pape) Jaschen in Maxfield Township, Bremer County, Iowa. She was baptized Hulda, Emma, Maria, Anna Jaschen on March 22, 1914 by Rev. Hulda was born February 27, 1914 to Moritz and Sarah (Pape) Jaschen in Maxfield Township, Bremer County, Iowa. She was baptized Hulda, Emma, Maria, Anna Jaschen on March 22, 1914 by Rev. Louis Yockey at the Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel Church at Klinger, Iowa. Hulda was confirmed April 1, 1928 at the Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel Church in Klinger, Iowa. She attended Parochial school in Klinger, Iowa from 1920 to 1930 and after completion worked at home. In 1930 she went to Mason City, Iowa to do domestic work. In 1931 she returned home to help her mother who had severe arthritis. During this time Hulda developed a skill for sewing. She was able to sew clothing without the use of a pattern. She sewed many clothes for her sisters. On July 1, 1933 she enrolled at Pitze's Beauty Academy in Waterloo, Iowa, graduating March 10, 1934. She worked in Calmar and Mason City, Iowa the summer of 1934. In August 1934, Hulda began working at Mary's Beauty Shop in Shell Rock, Iowa. It was in Shell Rock that she met her husband, Max Poorman. They were married on May 13, 1936 in St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa. She remained at Mary's Beauty Shop until March 1, 1938. In April 1938, Hulda opened her own beauty shop in Shell Rock, Iowa and operated it until May 1955. In May 1955, Hulda and Max moved to Waverly, Iowa and in August 1955, Hulda opened Hulda's Beauty Shop across the street from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Hulda and Max sold their home and beauty shop in Waverly and moved to Waterloo, Iowa on September 1, 1968. They moved to Sun City, Arizona on November 1, 1970. Hulda remained in her Sun City home until May 2012. She sold her home in 2012 and has been cared for at Villa Theresa Adult Care Home in Glendale, Arizona until her death. She has one son Gary, his wife Billie, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Grandson Jeffrey Poorman, Austin, Minnesota, Granddaughter Angela Poorman, Phoenix, Arizona and Great Grandson, Jacob Poorman, Austin, Minnesota. She also has a sister, Anetta Graening, Waverly, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews and friends. Hulda had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress, made many of her own clothes as well as for others. She did several types of embroidery, quilting and various crafts. She was active in her church, Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church, Sun City, Arizona. She loved to read and to tend to her flowers in her patio. She was preceded in death by her husband Max Poorman, her parents, four brothers: Ernest, Gustav, Richard and Walter. Five sisters: Erna Bublitz, Mason City, Iowa, Lizzie Buhr, Sumner, Iowa, Bertha Tims, Phoenix, Arizona, Malinda Applegate, Sun City, California, Martha Nolte, Readlyn, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Curt Schneider from St. Paul's Lutheran Church presiding. Public visitation will be held on Tuesday from 12:30 until services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery Shell Rock. In.
