Mrs. Waugh was born Hulda Martha Benz July 8, 1877, in Door Co., Wis., and was married at Hendricks on March 1, 1905. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Women's Society of Christian Service. Surviving are the widower; three daughters and two sons: Mrs. Paul Fosness of Mtown, Currie Waugh and Mrs. Leslie Ralston of Conrad, Virgil of Hendricks and Mrs. Jerry Stambrough of Gilman. Also 2 brothers: Emil Benz of Canyon Creek, Mont., and Arthur of Hendricks and 11 grandchildren. The funeral was held on Wednesday, July 30 at the Johnston Funeral Home with burial in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens at Marshalltown. Rev. Ben Harris was the officiating minister and Evelyn Stevens furnished the music. The above was taken from the newspapaer at Conrad, Iowa. Pallbearers at the funeral services were Walter, Don and Gene Haskins, Ronald Warner, Lloyd Benz, and Keith Bieschker. Mrs. Waugh was at one time a resident of the Hendricks community, the family having lived south of town for several years prior to moving to Conrad, Iowa in 1934. those from this vicinity who attended the services included Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Warner, Lloyd Benz, Mrs. Wm. Krier, Mrs. Clarence Krier, Mr. and Mrs. Art Benz, Myrta Warner, Virgil Crain, Mrs. Christine Sagmoe, Mrs. Norvald Trooien and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Waugh and family. Anderson, Owners and Publishers. --------- From the 50th wedding anniversary, Golden Memories by Irene Waugh Fosness: Hulda Martha Maria Benz was born in Door County, Wisconsin, on July 8, 1877. She came with her family to Minnesota from Wisconsin when she was 11 years old. They settled on a farm seven miles south of Hendricks. The first summer they lived in the neighbor's (Henry Buller's) granary while they built their own house. Hulda lived and worked on the farm until she was a young woman. She went to Minneapolis when in her early twenties to learn the dressmaking trade from her cousin, Emma Kohlholff. For a number of years she followed the trade, once having a dressmaking and millinery shop in Hendricks with Anna Sitte. In her middle twenties she went to North Dakota with girl friends and cousins and homesteaded near Bottineau, North Dakota. While she was on the homestead, her sister, May Gardner, wrote to her that she had best come home and meet their new hired man, John Waugh. She did that and a little over a year later they were married. Their married life began in the employ of a friend, Virgil Crain, on his farm starting in March 1905 until November that year. Then Virgil decided to marry Alice Hodson so John and Hulda moved to her father's farm, the Benz home, which they farmed one year. During that year, their first child, a daughter, Irene was born April 10. Their next move was to a homestead 60 miles west of Fort Pierre, South Dakota. In December 1906, they took bag and baggage, the baby, four houses, a cow and a dozen chickens and set out to live in an 8' by 10' shack on the prairie for a year. They traded Hulda's homestead for a farm four and one-half miles from Hendricks, Minnesota and the proceeds from the South Dakota homestead went into it also. They lived on the farm near Hendricks for 27 years and four children: Currie, September 7, 1908; Virgil, December 3, 1910; Perle, September 26, 1912; Eva, July 10, 1915 were born there. Those years were packed with memories of joys and excitement and problems similar to those of every family. The country school, District #21, the picnic at Lakes Shaokatan and Hendricks, Sunday School at the Shaokatan schoolhouse, sleigh rides and surrey rides and fun and folds filled those busy years. Irene and Virgil graduated from Hendricks High School, Eva graduated from Ivanhoe High School and due to an unfortunate accident on a toboggan, which injured heer leg for several weeks, Perle did not graduate from high school. Currie chose not to go to high school; lots of kids didn't in those years, but he went out into the world to seek his fortune and found it. Drought and depression and a nations upheaval worked havoc with many families and their fortunes in those years. Most of the farmers in the Hendricks area had heavy losses; many lost their farms. John Waugh was one of them. Hulda had a half-interest in a small piece of land in California with her sister, May Gardner. Her small equity went into the purchase of a farm six miles from Conrad, Iowa. On March 1, 1934, John and Hulda moved to that farm. Virgil married Bernice Nefstad on February 26, 1934, so they rented the old home farm in Minnesota from the receiver and kept part of the machinery to begin farming there. Drought and hard times caused them to call a sale and leave Minnesota for a few years but they returned to rent there until they bought their own farm. Irene had married Paul Fosness of Lakefield, Minnesota on May 9, 1931. Irene had graduated from Teachers College, St. Cloud, Minnesota and taught at Lakefield. She and Paul traveled for seven school years selling school assembly programs until Paul went with the C.A. Dunham Company at Marshalltown. Currie, Perle and Eva moved with their parents to the farm to look for greener pastures and life partners. They found both. Perle married leslie Ralston of Conrad, November 21, 1936 and settled on a farm near Conrad. Currie married Margery Richards of Arapahoe, Nebraska (Cedar Rapids), December 24, 1936. He, too, farms 5 miles from Conrad. Eva married Jerry (Gerald) Stanbrough of Whitten, Iowa on December 25, 1937. They farmed the Stanbrough homestead for several years.....
