Ida was born May 20, 1919, in Fayette to Walker and Maude (Solomon) Briggs. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1937 and attended Upper Iowa College. On April 9, 1944, Ida was united in marriage with Sidney Tope at her parents residence in Fayette. They farmed for many years in Fayette County before moving to West Union in 1993. Ida taught for many years at Auburn, Eldorado, Maynard and West Union schools. She also worked for Interstate Power Co. in Fayette and Carpenter and Kraft Lumber in West Union. She was a 50-year member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir, helped with Youth Group and Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the church's Willing Workers. Ida also served on the board of the West Union Good Samaritan Center. Preceding Ida in death were her parents; a son, Terry, at birth; and three brothers. Surviving are her husband, Sidney, West Union; two sons, Steve (Kaye) of LaCrosse, Wis., and Randy (Brenda) of West Union; and three grandchildren. Additional survivors include two brothers, David (Gloria) Briggs of Mound, Minn., and James (Mary Lou) Briggs of Fayette.
