I got the boys up, we ate breakfast and then started out in the sunshine and we enjoyed it so much we didn't want to go inside. Travel By Boat To Pateros We stayed in Wenatchee that day and night and the next morning at five we went aboard the Steamer Chelan and headed for Pateros. We hit the Cooper Rapids an five that afternoon, but on account of high water it took us until nine o'clock that night before we reached Pateros, the boat landing at the spot where the swimming pool now stands. It required four hours to make the last one and one-half miles. that was May 4th. We went to the Ives Hotel. There had been a dust storm that day and we couldn't' see anything but dust, I didn't like that but the next morning the sun was shining and I felt better. We stayed at the hotel for a few days then moved out to the Swindler place near Alta Lake. We stayed there two months, put n a garden and the groundhogs ate it up. I remember the day we went out there; we had to cross the Methow in a row boat. Mrs. Ives came down to the river to watch us. She knew it was my first ride in a row boat. I can say I felt more safe when we got on shore. Homestead's Place Near Lake Mr. Otto went to work for Mr. Cooper July 14th. We moved down to his place and lived in a tent. On the trip to the Cooper place everything was fine until we stared down the Cooper hill. It seemed the wagon hit a boulder every time the wheels turned. We had to hold on with all our strength to keep from being thrown out of the wagon and onto the rocks. We lived at the Cooper ranch until October when we moved to Alta Lake where Mr. Otto filed on a piece of land as a homestead. We did not have a house on the place so we put up a tent and went to bed. I awoke in the night and it was raining and the tent was leaking. I sat up the rest of the night and held an umbrella over the children so they could sleep. Neighbors Few Our nearest neighbors were the Harrison and Burch families at the south end of the lake. Mr. Harrison came over and helped make a dugout and we lived in that for two years. Then we got some lumber and built a cabin. We lived there for five years, and I can say they were five lonesome years. After that we came to town to live so we could send the boys to school, although they walked to school fro the lake the first term that was taught in the building that is now the Reporter office. Miss Williams was the teacher. She is now Mrs. E. B. Grinnell of Tonasket. Move to Pateros 1916 In 1916 when we moved to Pateros Mr. Otto died and after that we remained permanently in Pateros, first living in a small house on the vacant lot next to the Tracy Otto home, later purchasing the house where I now live.
