Description	:	Harold A. Otto, 97, a longtime resident of Pateros, passed away Sunday, April 19, 1998, at the Okanogan-Douglas Hospital at Brewster after a short illness. Mr. Otto was born March 16, 1901, the son of Fred Lane and Ida (Edwards) Otto at Getchell, Wash., a small logging community in western Snohomish County. In 1904 his parents and their three sons moved to Pateros, coming up the Columbia River by steamboat, after the train ride from the coast to Wenatchee. Otto, 97, a longtime resident of Pateros, passed away Sunday, April 19, 1998, at the Okanogan-Douglas Hospital at Brewster after a short illness. Mr. Otto was born March 16, 1901, the son of Fred Lane and Ida (Edwards) Otto at Getchell, Wash., a small logging community in western Snohomish County. In 1904 his parents and their three sons moved to Pateros, coming up the Columbia River by steamboat, after the train ride from the coast to Wenatchee. The family resided on a homestead by Alta Lake for about 16 years at which time his father died. The family moved to Pateros and the three boys became employed to support the family. On Sept. 4, 1924, Harold married Mary L. Smith of Bridgeport, at Okanogan, and they had a family of three children. In 1949 Harold and Mary purchased an orchard north of the town of Methow where he worked as an apple rancher until 1963 when they moved back to Pateros because of his wife's ill health. His wife of 40 years passed away in August of 1964 and Harold continued to reside in Pateros until his death. Harold had worked at all types of employment during his life, as a cowboy, on road construction, railroad construction, as a deck hand, on the "Bridgeport" steamboat, as a carpenter at the packing sheds and orchard worker, to name a few. After his wife's death, he wrote several poems about things he had seen, done and life in general. On Feb. 24, 1986, he was elected as the cowboy poet for the state of Washington by the state Legislature. In July 1997 he was selected as the grand marshal of the Pateros Apple Pie Jamboree. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Pateros. Harold is survived by three children, a son, Earl Otto of Tacoma, and two daughters, Grace Davidson of Bridgeport and Nada Buchanan of Pateros; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services are under the direction of Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
