IDA PETER, 94 Mrs. Ida Peter, longtime Holyoke resident and one of Phillips County's oldest people, passed away early Saturday, February 27, at the Logan County Hospital in Sterling. She was 94 years of age and would have observed another birthday in about six weeks. Mrs. Peter, who had resided at the Sheridan Manor Nursing Home here since March 20, 1964. She suffered a broken hip in a fall Friday morning, February 26, and was taken to the hospital in Sterling a few hours later. She had arisen early, as was her custom, and was dressing in her room when she fell. Surgery on the hip had been planned Saturday. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at the Holyoke Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. Milton McCreery officiating. Interment was at Holyoke Memorial Park. Arrangements were in charge of the Lewis Funeral Home. The eldest of nine children of John and Mary Wishart, Ida Ellen Wishart was born April 14, 1870 at Memphis, Missouri. All of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. On October 24, 1900, she was united in marriage to Charles R. Peter at Holyoke. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive. Her husband, who died on June 5, 1938, came to Holyoke from Memphis, Missouri in 1888. He began a long teaching career in 1889, later serving as Holyoke school superintendent for six years and as Phillips County Superintendent of Schools for 14 years. Mrs. Peter was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother, and from early childhood was an active church member. As a girl and young woman in Missouri she attended a rural Methodist church. After coming to Holyoke, she joined with her husband in the Presbyterian church, and since 1933 she had been a member of the Holyoke Church of the Nazarene. She was a charter member of that congregation. Surviving Mrs. Peter are three daughters, Mrs. Mary Shown, Center, Colorado, Mrs. Gladys Wagner, Pasadena, California, and Mrs. Helen Gueck, Holyoke; two sons, George Peter, Holyoke, and Robert Peter, Downey, California; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 24 nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
