Peter, 69, a resident of Phillips County the past half century, who died at his home in Holyoke Sunday morning following an illness of four year's duration. Suffering with a heart ailment, the late Mr. Peter was forced to retire from public life about four years ago. Since that time, his health has failed considerably, although his condition was not regarded as critical. Three weeks prior to his death, he suffered a severe heart attack, from which he failed to rally. Complication of advanced age developed. He died peacefully at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. Charles Robert Peter, a son of Jacob and Margaret* Peter, was born April 12, 1869 in Wooster, Ohio. He was one of a family of ten children. The family resided in Ohio until the year 1880, when they moved to Memphis, Missouri. The father died prior to the time the family members left Ohio. After residing in Missouri eight years, the Peter family moved west, locating in Colorado. An older brother, Philip, had located on a homestead northwest of Holyoke, and the other members of the family joined him. A group of homesteads were taken by the Peter family in the community where Beachville rural school is now located. During the first year in Colorado, Charles engaged in farming with his brothers. In the spring of 1889, he wrote examinations for the teaching profession, received his teacher's certificate and commenced his career. He was engaged in the teaching profession in Phillips County a period of 36 years, having been forced to retire four years ago. For a period of five years, he was engaged in the mercantile business with his elder brother, Phillip, and previously had been associated with O.C. Zingg in operation of a similar business. He also operated a cream station in the early 1900s. The late Mr. Peter served as superintendent of the Holyoke schools six years and he was superintendent of the schools of Phillips County 14 years. Marriage of Charles R. Peter and Miss Ida E. Wishart of Memphis, Missouri was solemnized at Holyoke October 24, 1900. To this union was born five children, all of whom survive. Despite his teaching duties and his public office work, Charles Peter always found ample time for engaging in community activities, church and lodge affairs. He was affiliated with the Odd Fellows lodge and the Modern Woodmen of America camp for years, membership being held at the time of his death. He served as secretary of the I.O.O.F unit many years and was clerk of the Woodmen camp 30 years. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church 40 years. Through his untiring efforts, the First Presbyterian Church, which now stands in Holyoke, was erected many years ago. He served as clerk of the Session, the governing body of Presbyterian churches, 25 years and was an elder of the local religious body many years. He was an instructor of a Sunday school class several years, at the time of his death being teacher of the Men's Bible class. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ida Peter; three daughters, Mrs. M.S. Shown of Monte Vista, Mrs. Neal Wagner of Pasadena, California and Mrs. Reece Gueck of Haxtun; two sons, George of Holyoke and Robert, principal of the Fort Lupton schools, eight grandchildren; four brothers, Allen of Holdrege, Nebraska, Philip of Paoli, Theodore of Bell Flower, California and John of Holyoke; and two sisters, Mrs. H.A. Trego of Centennial, Wyoming and Mrs. Sophia Troutman of Holyoke. Three brothers preceded him in death. Prayer was read at the Colver Bros Funeral Home at 2:15 o'clock after which service was conducted at the First Presbyterian Church at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. W.D. Waller, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated. Burial was made in the Holyoke Cemetery. The pallbearers were six members of the Men's Bible class which was taught by the deceased. They were John Swedberg. L.H. Kepler, F.A. Ralston, H.L. Colver, Clyde Worley and Adolph Pfau. All of the children of the deceased attended the funeral. *Graesle.
