(Indian Territory) last Saturday. About three weeks ago, Mrs. Constant went with her family to Claremore, where Mr. Constant had purchased the Claremore Messenger. Mr. Constant and daughter accompanied the remains back to their old home in Sabetha, where funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ida Denton Constant, wife of the editor of this paper, died in Claremore Saturday morning at 8:30, after an illness lasting from Tuesday night. The cause of her death as given by the physicians in attendance was heart failure brought on by inflammation of the brain, which in turn was due to an abscess in the ear. The remains were taken to Sabetha. Kansas for burial. When the heart is full to bursting the lips are dumb, and we could not, if we would, express in the faintest degree the crushing nature of this blow. The way seems dark, and the only solace to be found is in the hope that sweet memories, now coming only in whispers faint and low, will finally soften the cruel, gnawing pain. Constant who formerly edited the People's Banner at David City. The article will be interesting to the many friends of Mr. Constant in Sabetha, it follows. A. J. Constant, has sold the People's Banner plant and business to L. L. Thompson, from Croquet, Minn. The consideration named in the bill of sale is $_____. Mr. Constant disposed of the business on account of Mrs. Constant's state of health, physicians advising him that a change to a dryer climate is imperative to her. Mr. and Mrs. Constant will go to New Ulysses in southwester, Kansas and will stay there for some time if the climate is favorable, otherwise they will go further west and may travel by wagon. Mr. Constant has been poublisher of the Banner three years. He bought the People's Banner and the Davicd City Journal in February 1868, consolidating them, and a few weeks afterward bought the subscription list of the Garrison Argus. He was born in McLean County, Illinois in 1858, his father was a soldier for the Union and died in a hospital in Cassvielle, Mo in 1862. His mother and her six children moved to Clarks county Iowa, and she died there in 1867. Being left an orphan at nine years of age. Mr. Constant was bound out to William Gripp, a farmer in Clarke county, with whom he lived until fourteen years old. Then he worked at various farms for several years, attending country school some and going to school in Murray two winters, he saving money for that purpose. When eighteen year old he began learning the printers trade in the office of the Murray News under B. L. Harding. The latter sold out to J. B. Bishop, of the Afton Tribune News, and after experience of about a year Mr. Constant was given charge of the paper by Bishop and made good. In 1884 he became a partner of C. M. Aley in the publication of the Cedarvale (Kas.) Star. They sold the Star in 1886 to A. R. Green, who was elected state railway commissioner and had Mr. Constant conduct the Star for him, and when Green sold to F. G. Kenesson some three years later, Mr. Constant continued as manager of the Star four years more. In 1893 he bought two papers in Sabetha, Kas., the Republican and the Herald, and consolidated them, publishing the Herald there thirteen years, until 1906. He published the Messenger at Claremore, Okla. then Indian Territory, for five months, in 1907 trading it to Clark Smith for the Clearfield (Iowa) Enterprise. After remaining at Clearfield sixteen months he sold his paper there and early in 1908 came to David City. Mr. Constant is a capable newspaper man, a public-spirited citizen and a good business man, honorable and square. His influence here has been good and the many friends won by his manly qualities regret that illness in his family necessitates his disposing of the business he has built up and going elsewhere. The Press voices general and cordial sediments of the community in the wish and hope that Mrs. Constant may be speedily restored to health and that when they establish a new home it may be in as good a town and that with health may come added prosperity. ****************************************************** Jacob Alva Constant was the son of William and Eliza Denham Constant according to his obituary.
