She was born July 15, 1914, on Sheehan Flats, near Waterville, WA, to David and Maude (Hastings) Ferrel. She moved with her family to Medical Lake and the Peshastin/Leavenworth areas, following her father's work in farming, logging and construction of the Cascade Tunnel. She attended the one room Blewett School, which was near the present day Big Y intersection. The Ferrel family lived up at the old town of Blewett, where their father logged with a team of horses. An open air school bus, with canvas flaps to cover the windows in winter, provided transportation. She recalled her mother heating a rock on the wood stove to keep her feet warm while traveling to school. Later, she attended school in Peshastin and Medical Lake, before graduating from Peshastin High School in 1933. Following high school, she and her siblings cared for their invalid father, while their mother and brothers "worked out" to make a living. Mom also worked in apple sheds and private homes, where she honed her lifelong exceptional housekeeping, fabulous cooking and beautiful sewing skills. Mom was a wonderful historian and, armed with her Brownie camera, has left us many wonderful pictures that tell their own story about her life. She was a keeper of scrapbooks and has left each of us with our own special memories. In 1934, she met a good looking lifeguard, Eston Wyant, at the "City Plunge" in Leavenworth. They were married on May 22, 1937. In 1941, they moved to Portland, OR, where Eston was employed in the shipyards during World War II. Following the War, the family traveled to South Dakota to work and live with Eston's family. They returned to Leavenworth in 1946, and together with their friends, Elmer and Marge Fortner, opened "Elmer's Cash Grocery and Eston's Meat Market." Ida continued to live in Leavenworth until 2008, when she moved to Peshastin. Ida took pride in providing a stylish and comfortable home for her family. She loved to socialize and entertain her extended family and large circle of friends. She always had a cookie in the freezer for anyone who stopped by. She particularly enjoyed the games of bridge and golf. In later years, along with her friend, Aggie, she became a "regular" at yard sales. She loved the hunt for anything she could make more beautiful or useful by washing, polishing or ironing. She was a beautiful, loving and caring wife, mother and friend. She is survived by her daughters, Kay (Ken) Coffin and Jan (Jim) Fender and her son, Michael (Carol) Wyant, all of Leavenworth; and her sisters, Edith McCullough of Wenatchee and Grace Moeck of Anchorage, AK. She was so proud of her nine grandchildren: Gerry (Sabrina), Monte, Theresa (John Wynn) and Mark Coffin, Jennifer (Peter Brown), Allison (Josh Osborne) and Nicholas (Tyree) Fender and Christopher (Dana) and Sarah Wyant. She also leaves 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eston, in 1990; her parents; her brothers, Frank, David, Charles and Robert; and her sister, Anna. The family would like to thank Carolyn and Gene Sherwood and their family, who have provided a wonderful, loving home for our Mom since 2008. A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Ida L. Wyant will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene at 111 Ski Hill Drive, Leavenworth. Private Family Interment was held at the Mt. View Cemetery in Leavenworth. Memorial contributions may be made in Ida's name to the Cascade Medical Center Foundation at 817 Commercial Street, Leavenworth, WA 98826. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
