Description	:	Ida was the daughter of Josephus S. Goings and MaryAnn E. McCoy Goings. Her mother was born Jan. 4, 1835 in ILL. and died Mar. 4, 1917 in Ark. Her father was born in PA. Oct. 21, 1819 and died in Minden, Neb. June 3, 1891. Josephus was the grandson of a German emigrant who fought in the Amer. Rev. His name was Johann Heinrich Lett b. Josephus' father was Roswell Goings born in MD in 1779 and died Apr. 14, 1857 in Woodford, Ill. and his mother was Melissa Lett b. 1789 in MD. and died in 1867 in CA. Roswell was the son of Albert F. Goings b. 1750 in Ger. and died about 1810 in MD. Melissa's father fought in the Amer. Rev. and was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine. There is an interesting story on the death of Roswell Goings. He and his wife would get into very bad arguments. In April of 1857 they had a very bad argument that turned violent and Melissa picked up a piece of firewood and struck him twice on the head trying to defend herself. He sustained a skull fracture and died a couple of days later. She posted a $1000 bail and trial was set for Oct. 10, 1857. Abraham Lincoln was chosen to represent her. It was his most famous case in Metamora, Woodford Co., Ill. On the day of the arraignment Melissa was no where to be found after her meeting with Mr. Lincoln. When the court asked Mr. Lincoln where she was he said she asked where there was a good drink of water and he told her TN. Another story said that Abraham encouraged her to leave the state where she would be safer. The towns people felt that Roswell was a very angry person and there was never a warrant for her arrest. When the 1860 census was taken Melissa was living with her son Benjamin Louis Goings (FAG #15122335) and her daughter-in-law Mary Goings, grandchildren John, Franklin and Charles Goings, and a Watkins grandson in Guthrie, IA. Benjamin later moved to Alabama, CA. and Melissa moved with him where she passed away in 1867. Ida had 10 full siblings and three half siblings. Her father married an unknown woman in about 1845 in Ill. She was deceased by 1850. She probably died in child birth, because Charles Goings was born in 1850. On Nov. 25, 1852 Josuphus married MaryAnn McCoy in McLean Co., Ill. Their children were Sarah N. b. 1853 Ill., John W. b. 1855 Ill., Jesse b. 1858 Ill., Elnora b. 1860 Ill., Gardener b. 1863 Ill., Minia b. 1865 MO., Frank b. 1868 MO., Ethel b. Mar. 1870 MO., Ida b. Oct. 1873 MO., Lenette b. 1875 MO., and Berdetto b. 1878 IA. The three half siblings were James b. 1846 Ill., Alexander b. 1849 Ill., and Charlotte b. 1850 Ill. Little is known about any of these children. It is also unknown where Josephus passed away, but it was either Kansas or Neb. In 1880 he was living in KS. and Ida married in Harlan Co., Neb. in 1896. Mary Ann was living with Ida's family in 1910. Ida Mae was still living in 1940.
