She was united in marriage to Henry Bartels Febr. 24, 1892. To this union were born three children. Shortly after birth she was added to the family of God through the regenerating power of Holy Baptism. In the year 1884 she was confirmed by the Rev. George Weller at Marysville, near Staplehurst. She was united in marriage to Henry Bartels Febr. 24, 1892. To this union were born three children. The family made their home near and in Staplehurst all these years with the exception of twelve years which were spent near Delmont, S.D. To Mr. and Mrs. Bartels was given, as it is given to but few, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. This took place seven years ago. Mother Bartels has been in poor health since the beginning of this year. It was, however, about a week ago when she took seriously ill. Everything within human power was done to alleviate her condition, but she grew steadily worse, until Tuesday afternoon, May 31, 1949, when she quietly and peacefully passed away, while her loved ones were anxiously watching at her bedside. She reached the age of 79 years, 2 months and 14 days. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her death one son, Walter, Lincoln; two daughters, Dora Lorensen, York, and Christina Nehls, Ulysses; one half brother, John Niemann, Seward; and one half sister, Lizzie Bingham, Staplehurst; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon , June 3, 1949, at Immanuel Lutheran church, Staplehurst, the Rev. W. L. Ernstmeyer officiating. Appropriate hymns were rendered by the church choir. The mortal remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery. A pilgrim and a stranger, I journey here below; Far distant is my country, The home to which I go. Card of Thanks We wish to express our deep appreciation for the many acts of kindness and expressions of sympathy during the illness and at the time of her death of our dear wife and mother. We are especially grateful for the beautiful and comforting words of our minister, Rev. Ernstmeyer, and the singers, and all the others who shared our bereavement. Henry Bartels Walter Bartels and children Seward Independent, Seward, NE, Wed, June 8, 1949 STAPLEHURST COUPLE MARRIED 56 YEARS Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bartels observed their 56th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 22, although they were married on February 24. It was more convenient though, for the family to be together on Sunday than on a week day, hence the observance was on the 22nd. They brought along well filled baskets, and had a most enjoyable time in observing the most unusual event. There are three children, as follows: Mrs. Dora Lorensen of York, Mrs. Christina Nehls of Ulysses, and Walter Bartels of Lincoln, who with members of their families were present. Three membes of the family who also observe their birthdays in February were present and participated in the affair, these being James Lorensen, Feb. 20; Henry Bartels, Feb. 17; and Bernice Nehls, Feb. 24. Those present in addition to the honor couple were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bartels, J. P. Lorensen of York; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Nehls and Bernice, Mrs. Tillie Nehls, of Ulysses; Mr. Walter Bartels, Dick, Barbara and Margie Betty of Lincoln; Mrs. Lizzie Bingham and Mrs. Martha Bartels of Staplehurst. Mrs. Walter Bartels and Margie were unable to be present. Henry Bartels was born in Clayton county, Iowa, February 17, 1869. When a year and four months old his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bartels, came to Nebraska and entered a homestead two miles northeast of Staplehurst. Mrs. Bartels was born in a dugout on the homestead of her parents in that same locality, March 17, 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Bartels lived for a while in North Dakota, but most of their lives have been spent in the locality where their parents entered their homesteads. It is related that eight families migrated from Iowa, at about the same time, seven of them making the trip with ox-drawn covered wagons, while John Bartels, father of Henry Bartels, was the only one who drove a team of horses. The wedding cake served on the occasion of the anniversary was baked and decorated in white and pink, and was by a granddaughter, Bernice Nehls of Ulysses.
