Ida Rose Roberts was born April 17, 1913, in Rockford to Jennie (Patterson) and Robert Tumilson Sr. She was the fifth of six children born to her parents and attended school and resided her entire life in the Rockford area, with the exception of the past two years when she moved to the care facility in Riceville to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Ida was united in marriage to Gilbert Harry Roberts on Dec. 24, 1932, at First United Methodist Church in Charles City. They became the proud parents of three children, Frank Delano Roberts, Jane Marie (Roberts) Mosher and Robert Eugene Roberts. Ida was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend to all who shared in her life. Ida's baking skills, especially her homemade cinnamon rolls, pies and bread were among the best and she often shared her goods with family and friends. Ida's children often teased their mother that due to her generous nature, they needed to be near when the goods were ready to eat or she would give them all away before they, too, had the opportunity to indulge. On a daily basis, Ida and her sister, Minnie Graham, joined with a group of friends, known as the "Coffee Gang" at Captain Bly's in Rockford. They treasured this gathering time and cherished the wonderful memories. Those who best knew Ida recall that she was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and spending time with her family. According to her thoughts of Irish tradition, meals weren't meals without potatoes! They also well-remember her delicious fried chicken and gravy, her very early morning breakfasts and dining on her special recipe of (sugar) goulash. In Ida's earlier years, she was employed as a cook at the Starr Home and Ray's Pizza, both in Charles City, which were perfect jobs for her, given her ability to transform food into delicious meals! Ida was a woman with quick wit and great sense of humor. She was strong in both body and mind, devoted to her faith, very independent, enjoyed dancing in her later life, was a staunch Democrat never fearing to state her opinions, and a very giving person. Ida found comfort and joy in music. She loved to sing and having others sing with her, especially older and more traditional songs. She constantly amazed all who were around her with the ability to recite poems, even difficult and lengthy poems, and the Gettysburg Address, which she recited in its entirety since an early age! Ida will be dearly missed by all who shared in her long and full life. She is survived by her children, Frank (Gwen) Roberts of Fresno, Calif., Jane (Harvey) Mosher of Riceville and Bob (Elaine) Roberts of Sherwood, N.D.; her sister, Minnie Graham of Rockford; her six grandchildren, Gilbert (Susan) Roberts, Lance Roberts, Kerry (Sharon) Mosher, Kyle (Kathy) Mosher, Alan (Shannon) Roberts and Angie (Mike Mayer) Roberts. She will also be cherished by her 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Ida is preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Roberts, in March 1966; her parents, Jennie and Robert Tumilson Sr.; her three brothers, Samuel, Robert Jr. and Thomas Tumilson; and her sister, Annabelle Joesting. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers of the Riceville Community Rest Home for the kindness, love and care given to Ida. We love you Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt and Friend!
