Description	:	Ila Lavera Sloss Lydon was born in Baker Township, Guthrie County on February 5, 1921. She passed away at the age of 95 at Valley View Nursing Home in Des Moines Ia, on June 18, 2016. Ila lived most of her childhood in Baker Township. She was the fourth of six children born to Charles and Verna Sloss. She wrote many stories of her childhood in later years. She attended country schools... Read More	Ila Lavera Sloss Lydon was born in Baker Township, Guthrie County on February 5, 1921. She passed away at the age of 95 at Valley View Nursing Home in Des Moines Ia, on June 18, 2016. Ila lived most of her childhood in Baker Township. She was the fourth of six children born to Charles and Verna Sloss. Ila was somewhat a "Tom Boy" as she worked outside and played with her older brother Marvin who was just 15 months older. They had many adventures as children. She wrote many stories of her childhood in later years. She attended country schools with many of her cousins and attended Guthrie Center High School where she graduated when she was 16 years old. When she was 19, she and some friends took a long trip and toured many of the western states. She worked at the "5 and Dime Store", worked for her Dad at his livestock buying station and worked at the Triple A office, all in Guthrie Center. On October 12th, 1940, she married Tom Lydon in Savannah, Missouri. They lived in Guthrie for a short time and later rented 134 acres just NW of Casey where they farmed with horses and mules. There, their first child, Joy, was born at home. Later they moved to a farm northwest of Adair, near New Bethel Church where they lived until 1972. There they had 4 more children, Craig, who was stillborn, Julie, Paul and Nita. Ila was a home maker, worked on the farm and raised a large garden every year . When the Guthrie County Court House burned down, she took a job recopying burnt records by hand. Later she started working for the lawyers, Batschelet and Thompson. In 1972 they moved to Adair. She worked at Fisher Law Office for a short time and then went to work as a bookkeeper at the Adair Health Center where she worked for 19 1/2 years. She served as a temporary administrator several times during transitions. She retired in 1990. She and Tom enjoyed traveling, community service, helping kids and watching the grandkids and great grandkids in their various activities. In 2002 they made the move back to Guthrie Center where she lived till 2013 when she moved to Valley View in Des Moines. Ila was a faithful church parishioner. Her faith was very important to her and she planted those seeds in her children and others. She was a Sunday school teacher, MYF leader and held many offices in the churches she attended. She participated in the ladies church organizations at New Bethel, Adair and in Guthrie Center. She was also a member of the Women's Club in Adair and the Women's Auxiliary. She received a membership to the Fitness Center in Guthrie Center as a gift from a special friend. She enjoyed this immensely. She enjoyed the people and logged on many miles that kept her moving and fit into her 90's. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed her flowers which she shared with her children as they started their own flower gardens. Our family is so grateful that we had a Mother and Father who told us stories about their lives. Ila wrote many stories about her childhood and about her married life and her communities. We will always cherish those stories and those memories she left us. She was proceeded in death by her husband Tom, son, Craig Thomas, daughter Joy Delaine, Son in law, Earle Davis, son in law, Noel Johnson, her parents, Charles and Verna Sloss, Ilene and John Phillips, Norene and Merle Murphy, Beverly and Forest Kunkle and Marvin and Veronica Sloss and Delbert and Leona Sloss. She is survived by her children: Julie (Noel) Johnson of Des Moines, Paul (JoAnn) Lydon of Casey, and Nita (Tom) Fagan of Casey. Grandchildren: Brian (Jean) Davis, Chuck (Mary) Davis, Jodi (Jon) Russell, Mike (Sonya) Davis, Jeffery (Mari) Johnson, Craig and Sarah Johnson, Melissa (Jon) Schlatter, Karmin (Chad) Klingenberg, Paula (David) Sheeder, Trista (Mark) Emgarten, Lindsay Skram, Jason (Jen) Fagan, and Marcus (Stef) Fagan. Ila is survived also by 38 great grandchildren, a sister in law Arlene Jenson, brother in law Don Petit, and numerous nephews and nieces. Photo and obituary was published by Twigg Funeral Home .
