Norene was born on February 19, 1924, in Guthrie County, Iowa, to Charles and Verna Sloss as one of seven children. Even though she grew up during the Depression, she talked fondly of her childhood years in the Bear Creek area of Guthrie County. Norene was born on February 19, 1924, in Guthrie County, Iowa, to Charles and Verna Sloss as one of seven children. Even though she grew up during the Depression, she talked fondly of her childhood years in the Bear Creek area of Guthrie County. After graduating from Guthrie Center High School, she married Merle Murphy on December 17, 1941, at the age of 17. The couple settled on a farm on the Audubon-Guthrie County Line and built their home together, where they raised their three boys and farmed until Merle passed away in 1994. During those years, Merle and Norene loved socializing with the other couples in the rural community—playing cards, family gatherings, and especially dancing. They both were hard workers and worked together to add more land to their farm, and eventually Norene went to work for many years at the grocery store in Guthrie Center. She moved into town in 1994 and continued to work at the store until she retired at the age of 84 with much regret, knowing she would miss the social interaction with everyone who came through her line! She moved to Indianola the following spring to be closer to family. Norene had many friends and a loving family who will miss her feisty spirit. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle; her three brothers, Harold, Marvin, and Delbert Sloss; and two sisters, Ilene Phillips and Beverly Kunkle.
