Description	:	Ilene Phillips was born March 4th, 1918 in Guthrie Center, Iowa. She passed away at the age of 96 on April 9th, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14th at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. the same day. She passed away at the age of 96 on April 9th, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14th at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. the same day. Ilene was raised in the Guthrie Center, Iowa area. She was the 2nd of 7 children born to Charles and Verna (Sheeder) Sloss. Ilene graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1935. On December 23rd, 1936 she married John H. Phillips. They married at the Guthrie county court house and then walked hand in hand across the street to buy the most expensive steak dinner for their first meal as husband and wife. Each meal was $1.00. They moved to Palm Springs, California right away but within 6 months moved back to the Guthrie Center area to farm and be closer to family. During this time 3 of their children were born. In 1937, Twins Orville and Orvella were born and passed away due to premature birth. In 1939 their son, John "Eldon" was born. John and Ilene returned to California, living there from 1947 to 1949 where John worked on the Friant-Kern Canal. Their 2nd son Edward was born in 1947. They moved back to Guthrie County, living in Menlo for a few years. John took over the oil business with City Service while Ilene worked for five years in the Menlo Post Office. John was offered the opportunity to take over an oil business in Missouri Valley, so they moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa in 1964. This is where they operated the business, which they called J&I Oil Company for 17 years. Ilene handled the books and ran the office. She also sold Avon products. They retired in 1981, moving back to Guthrie Center, Iowa. Ilene belonged to the Eastern Star and both she and John were long time members of the United Methodist Church. In October of 2010 John and Ilene moved to Mill Pond, Assisted Living in Ankeny, Iowa where John passed away on April 26, 2011. Ilene enjoyed sewing, needle point, crochet, and quilt making. She enjoyed Genealogy, researching family history, and writing down stories from her childhood. Ilene treasured her family and loved each and every member with an overflowing "bushel and a peck". She loved God, loved life, and lived each day with a sincere desire to bless others. Ilene will always be remembered for her amazingly sweet spirit and kind words. Her life was a wonderful example of putting your trust in God, maintaining a thankful heart, and for always hugging like you mean it. Ilene was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Phillips; her son, Edward Phillips; her parents, Charles and Verna (Sheeder) Sloss; her brothers Harold Sloss, Marvin Sloss, and Delbert Sloss; her sister Beverly (Sloss) Kunkle. She was survived by her son Eldon Phillips; her sisters Noreen (Sloss) Murphy, & Ila (Sloss) Lydon; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.
