Ilo was born on October 18, 1917 to Albert and Lucretia (Wynia) Vanderboom in Platte, SD. He was a member of Olive Presbyterian Church. He attended Platte Public School graduating in 1936. He attended Morningside College for 2 years. He worked for his parents at Boom's Cafe in Canistota, SD before enlisting in the Air Force in 1943. Read More	Veteran WWII US Army Air Force Platte - Ilo Earl Vanderboom, 91, died Monday, February 23, 2009, at his home in Platte, South Dakota. Ilo was born on October 18, 1917 to Albert and Lucretia (Wynia) Vanderboom in Platte, SD. He was a member of Olive Presbyterian Church. He attended Platte Public School graduating in 1936. He attended Morningside College for 2 years. He worked for his parents at Boom's Cafe in Canistota, SD before enlisting in the Air Force in 1943. He served through the end of WWII as a bombardier trainer in the B-24?s. He returned to Canistota to work at Boom's. On May 20th, 1949, he married Eudora Determan. They moved to Platte and started Boom's Cafe. In 1959 he opened Boom's Drive-In in Platte and eventually in Wagner and Parkston. He operated Boom's until 1990 but continued working there until 2008. Boom was very active in the community serving as mayor, commercial club president, chaired the building committee for the Presbyterian Church and kept the streets and sidewalks swept. He was inducted into the SD Hall of Fame in 2006 in the Unsung Heroes and Good Hearts Category. He also received the Jefferson Award and Pride in Platte Award. He loved Platte and was instrumental in raising money for the million dollar renovation of the Community Building. He was an avid pheasant hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Emerson.
