Read More	Bio Courtesy Donna & Wayne Cain (#47719401) Printed in the Benkelman, NE Post, April 1995 Inez Mary Kate (Williams) Mathews was born September 4 1914, at Benkelman, Nebraska, the daughter of Robert Nicholson and Lydia Luella (Little) Williams. She attended school at the Hoover Precinct School in Dundy County On May 1, 1936, at Grant, Nebraska, she was united in marriage to Willard Henry Mathews They at first lived north of Benkelman, then in the Stratton, Nebraska, area, then moved to McCook, Nebraska, in 1953. They returned to Benkelman in 1961 when Willard retired. Following the death of her husband on June 20, 1971, she resided for 10 years with her sister, Irene Gooder. Mrs. Mathews was employe( at a cafe in McCook and then was a cook at Edna's Cafe in Benkelman. She worked for 21 years in the housekeeping department of the Hester Home in Benkelman until she retired in 1989. In her younger years she was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church. In January 1994, she was hospitalized for a cancer condition. That was apparently in remission until the spring of this year. She underwent surgery in Denver for the removal of a brain tumor on April 7. Dismissed from the hospital on April 15, she was staying at the home of her son, Willard, in Littleton, Colorado, and planning to return to Benkelman in about two weeks, when she died on Friday. April 21, 1995, at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 17 days. She was preceded in death by her husband; four children in infancy Esther Louise in February 1945, Lorene Joy in February 1947 and twins, Glennis Jean and Dennis Dean, in December 1950; three brothers: Cecil, Glenn and Orville, and a sister, Iola Joy Dalrymple. She is survived by eight children: Willard, and his wife, Darlene, of Littleton; Loyal and his wife, Sharon, of Grand Junction, Colorado; Dorene and her husband, Gary Purdy, of North Platte, Nebraska; Carolyn and her husband, Ron Edwards, of Benkelman; Gary and his wife, Carol, of Canon City, Colorado; Jackie and her husband, Bill Johnson, of Phoenix, Arizona; Jerry and his wife, Tina, of Benkelman, and Johny of Denver, Colorado. She also is survived by a sister, Irene Gooder, of Benkelman; two sisters-in-law, Florence Mathews of Wauneta, Nebraska, and Gretchen Williams of Bakersfield, California; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services for Inez Mathews were held Tuesday, April 25, 1995, at 10:30 a.m. at Jones Funeral Chapel in Benkelman with the Rev. Douglas Allen officiating. Jackie Wilson was the organist and Richard Bartholomew, with guitar accompaniment, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace." Bearers were her grandsons, Troy and Dennis Dugger, Jason and Kris Mathews and Craig and Randy Purdy. Honorary bearers, also grandsons, were Bryan, Spencer, Delos, William, Gary Charles and Willie Mathews and Ricky Purdy and family friend Kenny Fries.
