Iona Genevieve (Nelson) Pavlis was born on August 23, 1920 at her parents’ home (this house is gone) 8 miles southeast of Platte, SD to Gilbert and Inga Theodora (Sivesind) Nelson. She attended Darlington #4 Country School, Augustana Academy, Canton, SD and graduated from Geddes Public School in 1941. Before she married, she worked as a nanny in California and after her marriage, she worked for Roger Eastman's dad, Earl at the Eastman Drug Store in Platte. On April 14, 1943, she married her high school sweetheart, Harold William Pavlis in the home of her parents, presently the Gary and Paula Nelson home. In 1946 they moved to their present home 4 miles north of Geddes, SD. They had four children: Lyle, Cheryl, Jean and Vicky. Iona was a member of Frankes Lutheran Church in Bloomington, SD until it closed in 1952, then transferred to Tabor (now known as Trinity) Lutheran Church in Platte. She taught Sunday School, was a Bible Study Leader, and served in many women's groups as an officer, including the Good Will Circle. Iona and Harold joined the Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club in Geddes and danced at many national square dances, even in Hawaii. They attended a Dale Carnegie course which brought out the self confidence she exhibited the rest of her life. She loved children and everyone gravitated to her sweet smile. She was a gracious hostess and was always there when others needed anything. Among many other activities too numerous to mention, she was involved in the Geddes Civic Club, Hot Muffler 4-H Club and even drove school bus. She and Harold flew in a hot air balloon over their farm and rode in the Good Year Blimp – twice! Their travel adventures ranged from sleeping in the trunk of their car or the back of their pickup, to comparably luxurious travel in their motorhome. You could also find them in their white van at the Platte Food Center parking lot having a “picnic”, napping or just watching the interesting freight being hauled through town. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and various crafts, one of which was crocheting. Never being one to let things get the best of her, Iona continued to create by touch when her eyesight failed and body weakened, even crocheting while under hospice care. Iona is survived by her husband of 72 years, Harold; 2 children: Jean Sybesma, Platte, SD & Vicky Pavlis, Geddes, SD and Santa Fe, NM; 7 grandchildren, their spouses and 13 great grandchildren: Julie (Pavlis) & Brian Boehmke, Rachel and Katie of Webster, MN; Denise (Jaeger) & Dave Ehlers, Dillon and Rachel of New Castle, WY; Gloria (Jaeger) & Pete Horvath, Austin, Ashley Iona and Aaron of Dolton, SD; Lori (Jaeger) & Glen Dewald, Emily and Leah of Delmont, SD; Curtis & Tiffany (Simek) Sybesma, Cameron and Andrew of Geddes, SD; Valerie (Sybesma) & Gabe Strand of Platte, SD; Cindy (Sybesma) & Doug Lucas, Dillon and Jersey of Platte, SD; a brother, Leo & wife, LaDene Nelson; sister-in-law, Beatrice (Pavlis) Mushitz; brother-in-law, Sonny Pavlis; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Iona was preceded in death by her parents; 2 children: Lyle 2001 and Cheryl Jaeger 2006; in-laws: C. Dale Sybesma 2004, Judi Pavlis 2009 and Robert Jaeger 2012; a brother, Selmer and wives, Nadine and Frances; a sister, Darleen (Nelson) and husband, Russell Nelson; sister-in-law, Marjorie Nelson; and brother-in-law, Victor Mushitz.
