HOOPES Iowa Ellen HOOPES, daughter of Philander and Martha BONNIFIELD CHANDLER, was born in Buchanan township, Jefferson county, territory of Iowa, Feb. 22, 1846. HOOPES Iowa Ellen HOOPES, daughter of Philander and Martha BONNIFIELD CHANDLER, was born in Buchanan township, Jefferson county, territory of Iowa, Feb. 22, 1846. At the age of seven years she made the trip, with her parents, by ox team, to the logging camps of Wisconsin where she remained three years. In the following years she attended district school, the Fairfield Seminary, and one year at Meadville, Penna. On March 15, 1864 she was married to Oliver T. HOOPES who preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1925. To this union were born six children: Harley Allen and Hattie C. of this city, and Warner Ellis of Carrington, North Dakota, who remain to mourn her departure. Three children died in infancy. From the Fall of 1876 to the Spring of 1895 the family lived on their farm two miles northeast of Fairfield. Here among the toils and hardships of those early days the children grew up and amid these joys and sacrifices the sterling character was formed which so endeared Mr. and Mrs. HOOPES to their neighbors and friends. April 16, 1895 the family moved to the home where they resided till each were called from it to the Heavenly Home. Here Mrs. HOOPES enjoyed the association of her friends and neighbors and until her health failed the privileges of the church were her delight. At an early age she gave her heart to Christ and became His devoted follower. She was a loyal member of the Methodist church, a faithful and consistent christian (sic. Christian), walking and talking with her Savior all the way. This kindly, gentle and godly woman will be greatly missed but the sweetness of her rich womanly life will long linger as a memory to bless those who knew her. ~~~~ The Fairfield Ledger, June 21, page 1, col. 2. MRS. O. T. HOOPES IS DEAD TODAY Funeral For Pioneer of County Will be Held Thursday From the Home Mrs. Oliver T. HOOPES passed away this morning at 11:30 oclock at her home, 401 West Briggs street, following an illness of a number of years which made her an invalid, having taken a turn for the worse last Wednesday night. Funeral services will be held from the home Thursday afternoon at 3 oclock in charge of Dr. H. B. Scoles, pastor of the First Methodist church. Interment will be made in the Evergreen cemetery (sic. actually buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery , Lot 1 adjacent to Lot 150, which contains other members of the HOOPES extended family). Before her marriage to Mr. HOOPES, she was Iowa CHANDLER and was born February 22, 1846 northeast of the city. She has made her home in this county since Mr. HOOPES died December 3, 1925. The following children survive, Harley A. of this city, Warner of Carrington, N.D., and Miss Hattie C. at home. Three children passed away in infancy (sic. Kitty, Milo , and Rolla H.). This data has been transcribed for genealogical purposes; I am not related to the subject. Note: Buried at Old Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa. Lot #1 by Lot#150, which also contains other members of the HOOPES family. An 1850 census inadvertently used the spelling of the patriarchial family name as "HOOPS", causing subsequent confusion about the surname spellings for those buried in this plot. The headstones do use the HOOPES surname spelling, thankfully.
