Mrs. Martha CHANDLER, who died in Buchanan township the 20th inst., was one of the women pioneers of Jefferson County, and her residence here dated from 1836. Mrs. CHANDLER was born in Randolph county, Virgina, October 4th, 1822, and her maiden name was BONNIFIELD. With her parents she came to Illinois in 1835 and to Lockridge township, this county, the following year. December 28th, 1841, she was married to Philander CHANDLER, who died in this county about ten years ago. Five children were born to them, four of whom are yet living -- Mrs. O.T. HOOPES, W.E. and C.S. CHANDLER in the vicinity of the old home in Buchanan township, and Mrs. O.E. HOBBIE at Quincy, Ill. Mrs. CHANDLER united with the Methodist church at the age of fifteen years, and remained a consistent member of that denomination until her death. She was a woman of strong character, a helpful neighbor and kind friend. In the community in which so much of her life was spent she was very generally beloved and esteemed. Her remains were interred in this city Thursday, funeral services being held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O.T. HOOPES. Rev. E.L. Schreiner conducted the services.
