Mr. Goss' death came after a 38-year illness of multiple sclerosis, which had necessitated his retirement in 1940. He had been confined to a wheelchair 25 years, yet pursued an active interest in the affairs of his community and church. He spent 36 years with the Continental Insurance company (later America Fore group) in Chicago, being manager of the farm department 22 years and also heading the crop hail department the last three years. He was responsible for originating various forms of farm insurance coverage. Nationally recognized in the insurance field, Mr. Goss was president of the Farm Underwriters association four terms and in 1931 was appointed by President Herbert Hoover to the National Committee on Home Ownership. Also active in national fire prevention promotion, he worked with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Boy Scouts of America in this regard. A member of the 1903 class of Wabash college, he gave his alma mater a lifetime of devotion. In 1963 his service was recognized when Wabash granted Mr. Goss its Award of Merit, highest honor available to an alumnus. He provided the college with over $70,000 in grants for the Ira D. Goss Scholarship Fund, used for worthy students with special consideration to Fulton county residents. He also presented the college with his south shore Lake Manitou cottage as a faculty retreat and for almost 60 years referred young men to the Wabash student body. On the community scene, he was an active member and supporter of the Grace United Metodist church and was one of the prime organizers of the United Community Givers in the city and township. Born March 3, 1878, in the Mt. Olive community south of here, Mr. Goss was the son of Jonas and Mary HOFFMAN GOSS. He graduated from RHS in 1897 and was a reporter for The Sentinel two years before enrolling at Wabash with a savings of $150. Then interested in pursuing journalism, he worked his way through Wabash as correspondent for Indianapolis newspapers and also as a summertime insurance salesman. The latter experience led him into his successful career. His first marriage was in 1904 to Jessie FULLENWIDER, who died Feb. 16, 1948. His second marriage was in 1952 to Lena MOGLE DAVIS, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Virginia ARCHER, Rye, N.Y.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Eugene (June) DAVIS SCHEIMAN, Chicago, and Mrs. Edward (Marcia) ROHRS, Batavia, Ill.; two granddaughters, Miss Elizabeth ARCHER, Rye, N.Y., and Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) McFADDEN, Decatur, Ill.; two grandsons, Robert ARCHER, Jr., New York City, and David GOSS Jr., Des Moines, Ia., and twelve grandchildren. Preceding in death were a son, David [GOSS], in 1953; a sister, Martha [GOSS], also in 1953, and two brothers, Byron "Biff" [GOSS], in 1964, and the Rev. Samuel [GOSS].
