The maiden name of his mother was Sylvia Rood, both his parents being natives of New York. When Ira was three years old his parents with their two children moved to Cleveland, Ohio .... For several years his father was engaged in merchandizing in the now city of Cleveland, and it was here where Ira received his first education. When he had reached the age of sixteen years, the family (which had increased to seven children in all, four sons and three daughters) moved from Ohio in 1852, and located in the village of Victoria, Knox county., Ill ... he was sent to Galesburg, Ill., in the winter of 1853-4, where he ended his school days in the academic department of Knox college. When at the age of nineteen he took a clerkship in a dry goods store in the town of Alton, Ill.,. some twelve miles distant from his father's home ... In the year 1858 ... came to Kansas accompanied by a young man of near his own age, whose name was Edward Olmstead. These two young men first touched Kansas soil at Leavenworth, and from there came on foot to Holton, which place Ira I. Taber ever called home ...in 1850 organizing the first school district in this county, and in the same year, June 6th was appointed clerk of the probate court ... continued clerk ... until May 1860, and in this year, June 12, was married to Lizzie Parks There was born to this marriage five children, four sons and one daughter, the eldest of the sons, Ira, is connected with a bank in Blue Rapids, this state, the next son, Otis, has been with his father here; his daughter Minnie, married Mr. F. S. Scott, of this city, and his eldest son, Ira, married Miss Hatch, and Otis married Miss Thomas, of California. Two sons, Alpha and Homer, are still single .... He was elected county clerk of Jackson county in 1859, and held the office until 1854 ... He enlisted in the army, company B. 11th Kansas, August 16, 1862, and was mustered out August 19, 1865. He had been twice promoted, and when mustered out was first lieutenant and adjutant of the regiment. He took part in several important battles, such as Prairie Grove, Pea Ridge and Westport ... He was elected district clerk in November, 1865 held until January, 1875, a part of this time he was in partnership with H. Tucker ....
