Longsworth, prominent Lima attorney and former mayor, was dead Thursday following an automobile crash Wednesday night at the corner of W. Market-st and Woodlawn-av. After a thoro investigation of the accident at the direction of Chief John W. Cook, police announced they believed the collision to have been unavoidable because of weather conditions. William B. Carr, 358 S. Jackson-st, driver of the other machine which figured in the crash, told police that visibility was poor Wednesday night because of falling rain and sleet. Carr stated that approaching Woodlawn-av from the east, he applied his brakes but that the car skidded into the path of the approaching machine in which Longsworth was riding. The accident occurred at 10:40 p.m. while Longsworth was en route to his home in the automobile of William T. Kinzer, 708 W. Wayne-st. Mrs. Kinzer also was a passenger in the machine, but was not injured. Kinzer received cuts and bruises about the face and head. The Kinzers had met Longsworth in the downtown section a short time before. Their machine was going south in Woodlawn-av while Carr, driving a small coups, was going west in W. Market-sts. Carr was accompanied by Clark Dunbar, 24, of 278 S. Pine-st, who received severe cuts on the face and head and a deep cut on the right hand. The injured were removed to St. Rita's hospital in a Davis, Miller & Son ambulance. The Kinzers were intimate friends of the victim, Kinzer, a building contractor having offices with those of Longsworth at 409-412 Citizens'-bldg. Mrs. Kinzer served as Longsworth's secretary. SUFFERS SKULL FRACTURE Longsworth died at midnight, suffering from a fractured skull, never having regained consciousness. The injured were released from the hospital after receiving treatment. According to police, the impact of the crash threw Longsworth violently against the rear window in the car. Report of the accident also stated that rain and sleet was falling and that the pavements were slippery. With the exception of William L. Mackenzie, Longsworth had practiced in Lima longer than any other attorney. He was one of the oldest members of the Allen-co Bar-assn, and was former president of the association. Longsworth had been a resident of Lima since 1878. He was born at Van Wert, Oct. 2, 1859, and was a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. William N. Longsworth. EDUCATED AT VAN WERT He was educated at Van Wert, and in 1876 was graduated from its high school. He was prepared by a tutor for the junior year at Wooster college, but in 1878 located at Lima and finding a business opening as manager of his father's manufacturing plant, forever terminated his college career. He continued to manage his father's establishment, which was engaged in the manufacture of handles for farming implements, until 1882, and then purchased it and conducted the business at Lima until 1888, when he removed it to Anderson, Ind. In 1898, he removed the plant to Somerset, Ky. Altho Longsworth deemed it expedient at the time to give up his collegiate course, it did not prevent his studying for the bar, to which he was admitted in 1880. He then opened an office in Lima. In 1890, he was elected mayor of Lima, serving two years. Frank M. Dotson, Longsworth's first law partner, was admitted to the bar with Longsworth. Dotson later was law director of Toledo, in which city he died only last week. Their partnership was for 18 months. Longsworth's last association was known as Longsworth and Kephart, which continued for one year. With these exceptions, Longsworth practiced alone. Longsworth also was interested in operating oil wells, and was a producer in the Trenton rock fields of Ohio and Indiana. He was secretary of several successful companies. RAILROAD COUNSEL Longsworth had been counsel for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in the Lima district for the past 30 years. At the time of his death, Longsworth was a trustee of the Auglaize Baptist-assn., a member of the official board of First Baptist church and teacher of the Men's Bible class. He was a member of the church for more than 40 years and served as director of the church choir during practically all of that period. He was a former president of the Lima Chautauqua-assn and former chairman of the Allen-co Republican executive committee. He was president of the Lima Y.M.C.A. when the first "Y" building was erected at the present site of Uhlman's store on the Public-sq and was a member of the association board for many years. He also was a member of the Lima chapter of Torch clubs. Surviving relatives are the widow, Esther Longsworth; one son, Walter I. Longsworth, of Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. John Breese and Mrs. Morris H. Smith, both of Lima; three brothers, S. N. Longsworth, of Fort Wayne, Reese Longsworth, of Oklahoma, and Howard Longsworth, of Pamplin, Va.; and two sisters, Mrs. Petty M. Edson, of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. D. W. Long, of Convoy. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Other funeral arrangements had not been completed early Thursday afternoon. (published in The Lima News, Thursday, February 4, 1932)
