Ira Thomas Echelberger, son of William L. and Susan Barton Echelberger, was born June 13, 1889, in a log cabin in Webster county. He was reared and educated in the Lehigh-Homer community. He entered World War I in 1917, serving with the army as a ship-builder at Newark, N.J. Following his discharge in 1918, he returned to the Lehigh community. He was united in marriage July 19, 1922, at Webster City to Edna Blanch Lockey Goodell and they made their home in Fort Dodge where Mr. Echelberger was employed as a blacksmith with the gypsum mills. In 1927, the family moved to Kamrar where he engaged in the blacksmith trade and later in carpentry. He retired in 1957, but the family continued to reside in Kamrar. He is survived by his wife; four daughters and three sons: Mrs. Clarence (Florence) Wing, Mrs. Reo (Gladys) Bettis, and Mrs. Harold (Zola) Baker, all of Des Moines, Mrs. Willard (Virginia) Anderson, Webster City, Kenneth Goodell, Santa Ana, Calif., Bill Echelberger and Bob Echelberger, both of Kamrar; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters, Frank Echelberger, Fort Dodge, Eldon Echelberger, Joshua Tree, Calif., Mrs. Agnes Harlow and Mrs. Millie Collingsworth, both of Capistrano Beach, Calif., and also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, his parents and two sisters. Mr. Echelberger attended the Evangelical United Brethren church. He was a member of the American Legion.
