Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 31 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with the Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial was at St. Mary Cemetery in Sigourney. Irene was born April 4, 1921, near Richland, to Jess Green and Lillian Susan Smith Cavin. She attended school in Richland and Sigourney. Survivors include her children, Mary Valdez of Denver, Colo., Carol Klinkkammer of West Branch, Barbara Hansel of West Branch, George Flanegan of Iowa City, Paul Flanegan of West Branch and Patrick Flanegan of Iowa City; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James and A.J. Cavin, both of Sigourney; two sisters, Catherine Graves of Glenwood and Bernadine Laud of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Virgil and James Flanegan; and a sister, Ruth Cox.
