Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Irene passed away Nov. 27, 2009, at Medcenter One in Bismarck due to a sudden heart attack. Irene Knutson was born the second of seven children to Lawrence and Margaret (Ihle) Gustin on March 24, 1932, in Haynes. She was raised on the family farm south of Hettinger and attended school in Hettinger and at New England St. Mary's, graduating from Hettinger High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to Jay O. Knutson on June 12,1950, and they had five children — Jayleen, Pamela, Thomas, Sandra and Mark. For many years, the couple and their family lived in Hettinger later moving to Dickinson where they lived and worked for 20 years. During this time, Irene was a dedicated mother and homemaker caring for her growing family. While in Dickinson, she also worked for 10 years at the women's retail fashion store, Buttreys. In 1986, Irene moved with her husband to Bismarck where she continued to enjoy being a homemaker and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Irene demonstrated her affection for family and friends through the love of cooking. She truly enjoyed preparing meals, and baking cookies, breads and other delicious dishes for family and friends. She was exceptional at crocheting and she created many beautiful afghans for family members. She loved to read, collect recipes and was an avid fan of professional football and bull riding. Irene shared a special closeness with her children, grandchildren and her siblings. She enjoyed traveling with her brother and sisters to celebrate special occasions together and also loved her trips to Colorado and Michigan to visit her daughters and their families. Irene had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, and she knew how to make each one of them feel special and loved in their own unique way. Irene is survived by her sons, Thomas (Diana) Knutson, Dickinson, and Mark (Val) Knutson, Lander, Wyo.; her daughters, Sandra (Dan) Beaudoin, Midland, Mich., and Pamela (Dominic) Wood, Chicago; her sisters, Loretta Thorstenson and her family, Libby, Mont., Pat (Ed) Ellefson and her family, Bismarck, and Peggy Schiller and her family, Seattle; her brother, Don (Jan) Gustin and his family, Rapid City, S.D.; her sisters-in-law, Charlene (Denny) Tank and her family, Bismarck, and Ada Jean Cornella and her family, Hettinger; her brothers-in-law, Dennis (Eva) Knutson and his family, Hettinger, and Bill Taggart and his family, Reynolds, Ind.; her grandchildren, Rachel (Rob) Peterson, Tom (Ann Zanger) Beaudoin, Andrew Beaudoin, Jesse (MicKallyn) Elis, Haley Knutson, Mailyn Moran, Ceria (Ryan) Kroh, Jayd Moran and Tanya Yardus; three great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Jayleen Stoltz; her parents, Lawrence and Margaret Gustin, her in-laws, Kathryn and John Knutson; her sister and bother-in-law, Marie and Denny Henderson; her sister, Delores Taggart; her brothers-in-law, Charles Thorstenson and David Knutson; her niece, Kathy Morrison; her nephews, Doug Knutson and Cory Gran; and her step-grandson, Tyrel Hallet.
