Irene Josephine (Oltman) Hoaglin was born on February 8, 1915 in a small community called Bucknam’s Crossing near Manly, Iowa to Harm and Christine (Christensen) Oltman. Irene Josephine (Oltman) Hoaglin was born on February 8, 1915 in a small community called Bucknam’s Crossing near Manly, Iowa to Harm and Christine (Christensen) Oltman. She was the oldest of 3 children. Her two brothers, Clark Oltman and Max Oltman preceded her in death as did her sisters-in-law, Nina and Beverly Oltman. Irene grew up in Manly, Iowa where at age 8, she began playing piano at church. She only knew one song, so she played it every Sunday. She graduated from Manly High School at age 16. Her parents thought she was too young for college, so she remained at home for one year before attending Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from Coe in 1934 with a major in piano and music education. As of her 105th birthday she was the oldest living Coe College graduate. Her first teaching job was in Hillsboro, Iowa. She taught a variety of subjects – elementary and high school vocal music, instrumental music, typing and bookkeeping. Her elementary music programs were a highlight of the Christmas season. When Hillsboro consolidated with Bonaparte and Farmington Schools, she taught middle school music, high school music and French for a combined total of 34 years. She broke many a baton in her long career! She met her husband, Vinton D. Hoaglin, in Hillsboro when a friend of his dared him to ask her out. They married on October 8, 1939 and were married 42 years before Vinton passed away in 1981. They had one daughter, Joanna (Steve) Reno. Irene has 2 beloved grandchildren, Shannon (Eric) Hanson of Cedar Rapids and Erik (Lisa) Reno of Johnston. Shannon and Erik spent a lot of time with Grandma reading the same books over and over and playing Scrabble. She complained she never could beat them! She instilled a love of music and reading in them as well. Irene has one great-granddaughter, Ryan Reno, now 3, whom she loved seeing whenever she could. Irene played the piano and organ at the Hillsboro Baptist Church where she was a member for over 75 years, only stopping when her hearing became an issue and she could not tell if she was playing the right notes. She was an active member and leader in community organizations such as Chapter AB, PEO, and Delta Kappa Gamma as well as the Hillsboro Public Library, Quilter’s Club and Alpha Club. In her retired years, she loved quilting and made many quilts and wall hangings. She did crossword puzzles, Sudoku, cryptoquotes and word jumbles every day from the newspaper. Irene was a perfect example of a gracious lady, wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all her family and friends. Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no services will be held until late summer. Memorials are designated to the Hillsboro Library, Hillsboro Baptist Church or the Brian Cretzmeyer Trust for Young Musicians (Iowa City, Iowa) which provides musical instruction for students who might otherwise not be able to receive them.
