Irene Bayne of Monticello died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following an extended illness. Survivors are five stepchildren: Joseph (Mary Jane) Bayne of Eugene Ore., Patricia (Allen) Hinz, Janice (Elmer) Jandik, both of Cedar Rapids; Judy (LeRoy) Wood of Anamosa, Dennis (Sandy) Bayne of Monticello; 14 grandchildren and 33 greatgrandchildren, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, and a grandson, Stephen Hinz. Irene Specht was born July 17, 1917 in Anamosa, the daughter of Chris and Lena Rickels Specht. She received her early education in the rural schools of Linn and Jones Counties. She graduated from the Anamosa High School in 1936. She then began teaching in the rural schools of Jones County. She taught in the Brady #4, Cass #3, Lovell #2, Black Oak, Castle Grove #2, South Fork #4, and Lovell #4. She taught the remaining 32 years in the Olin School System. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1968 from Coe College, Cedar Rapids. She retired from teaching in 1969. She made sure that all her students were exposed to music and band. Following her retirement from teaching, she was employed as a custodian at the Sacred Heart Church and School, so she could be near students. On November 22, 1945, she married Michael F. Brady at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello. They later divorced. On Aug. 19, 1966, she married Ralph M. Bayne at the Peniel Presbyterian Church, Castle Grove. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1977. Since 1991, she has made her home at the Monticello Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Bayne enjoyed writing stories and verses since childhood. Her poem, "Secret Love", was published by the American Poetry Association and a short story, "How Sad It Is", was published in the local newspaper. She was a member of the Wapsi Valley Writers Club. At a very young age, she started corresponding to her cousin Lottie in Germany, learning German in the process. Following her husband's death, she made two trips to Germany to visit her cousin. Irene Bayne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was its treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary.
