Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Anamosa for the late Chris Specht last Saturday, January 14. Mr. Specht took his life the preceding Thursday by hanging himself in the barn on his farm. His body was found by his nephew, John Stimpson, Jr., who had spent the preceding night with Mr. Specht. It was hanging from a rafter in the barn. Mr. Specht had been despondent since the death of his wife, who died November 30, 1932, and had been worried over financial matters. According to the coroner of Linn county,Mr. Specht had attempted to take his own life with a shot gun a few days before, but missed his mark on two trials, and abandoned the plan. The officer also stated that he had been taken to Cedar Rapids for examination by the insanity commission, but no action was taken. Mr. Specht resided In Linn county, eight miles northwest of Anamosa. He was born August 12, 1873 and was the eldest son of John D and Gertrude Specht. He was married to Lena Rickels, April 1, 1912. The family home was made at Farley for one year following their marriage, and then Mr. and Mrs. Specht removed to Buffalo township, Linn county. Mr. Specht is survived by one daughter, Irene, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Stimpson of Anamosa and Mrs. Myrta Gerdes of Terra Bella, Calif., and also by three brothers, Herman of Miami, Fla., and John and George of Monticello. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. David Beggs, pastor of the congregational church, and burial was made at Prairie Hill cemetery west of Monticello.
