Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 12th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father DeWayne Kayser as the Celebrant. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Wednesday at Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:30-10:15 AM at Weiland Funeral Chapel followed by procession to the church for mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Irene Marie Johnson was born October 4, 1922 to Clyde and Grace (Townsend) Johnson at Farmer, South Dakota. She attended school in Farmer and graduated from high school in 1940. She met the love of her life, Lawrence, at a dance in Farmer. They were married while Lawrence was home on leave from the US Army on March 8, 1943. They lived in Bakersfield, California where Lawrence was stationed until he left for the European Front in WWII in 1944. Irene returned to SD with their infant son, Larry, where she worked and awaited the return of her husband. Following Lawrence’s discharge in 1945, the couple began their farming career near Hadley, MN. During their nine years in Hadley, they were blessed with four more children, Marvin, Janet, Roger, and Bruce. During those years, Irene was a busy and loving mother and housewife. In February of 1955, the Eich family returned to South Dakota where they purchased a farm near Winfred. In 1960, they were blessed with their 5th son, Dean. The devotion of raising a busy family on the farm was a challenge Irene embraced. She grew a large vegetable garden and canned produce until all the jars were filled! She also extended her green thumb to growing a beautiful flower garden. There was always a hot meal on the table and some sweets to reward her family at the end of the day. When she wasn’t baking or gardening, Irene loved to sew and do crafts. In 1979, the couple retired and moved to Madison. The blessing of good health enabled the couple to enjoy warm winters and dear friends in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. It was there that Irene’s passion for creating and crafting grew! She was always interested in learning something new to teach her friends back in Madison. She prided herself in being an instructor both in Texas and back home in Madison. Her family was the recipient of her handy works, most notably a quilt for each of her children which she sewed in the last five years of her life. Grateful for sharing her life are her husband of 73 years, Lawrence, of Madison; five children, Larry Eich, of Loves Park IL, Marvin (Jackie) of Winfred, Janet (Loren) Struble of Huron, Roger (Marletta) of Madison, and Bruce (Sharon) of Mesa AZ; 12 grandchildren, Cindy Eldred, Becky White, Randy Eich, Michelle Bunker, Justin Eich, Lance and Derek Struble, Austin and Paul Eich, Sara Wardner, Bryan Eich, and Kimberly Giltner. Irene delighted in her 20 great-grandchildren; Emma Eldred, Braden, Delaney, and Helena White, Jenna Bunker, Dylan Andersen, Derrick, Conner and Carson Eich, Holden, Madeleine, Cord and Keegan Struble, Charlotte, Elena, Adelaide, Kyler and Presley Eich, and Tyler and Logan Wardner. Irene is also survived by two brothers, Donald (Fran) of Tea SD and Roy (Virginia) Johnson of Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ruby and Jean, in childhood, her son, Dean, and her daughter-in-law, Janet. - Weiland Funeral Chapel
