Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 7th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father DeWayne Kayser as the Celebrant. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Wednesday at Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM and a Rosary to follow. Lawrence Matthias Eich was born to Matt and Dora (Bender) near Epiphany, South Dakota on July 23, 1920. The third of five children, he grew up caring for the animals and crops on his family farm. He proudly answered his country’s call and entered the United State Army in 1942. After meeting a special lady at a dance in Farmer SD, he married the love of his life, Irene, on March 8, 1943. They lived in California while he was stationed at Minter Field. In November of 1944, Lawrence was shipped out to the European Front of WWII making it necessary for Irene to return to SD with their infant son, Larry. Upon Lawrence’s return from the war, the couple began their farming career near Hadley MN in 1946. Having purchased the McCloed farm near Winfred, the family relocated there in the spring of 1955 where Lawrence spent 30 years tirelessly working the land and milking his dairy herd. His devotion to farming meant many long days and hard work. He modeled a lifestyle which influenced each of his children to be hardworking individuals. The farm was always a “family farm” where work and rewards were shared. In 1979 Lawrence and Irene retired in Madison. The freedom to travel allowed them to spend 31 years wintering in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. There they enjoyed the company of many dear friends, evenings of card games, square dancing, and the warm sunshine. While there, Lawrence prided himself in learning to swim when he was 60 years old. A lifelong learner, he also pursued woodworking classes while in Texas. Those classes evolved into a hobby that filled many hours for him when he returned to SD. He welcomed eager grandsons to his workshop encouraging them to hammer, saw and nail to their heart’s content! Each Christmas he blessed his children with one of his handcrafted items. Throughout his years of farming, Lawrence purchased many tractors and machinery pieces, but his 1950 Ford 8N was a keeper! Originally the only tractor he had, he and his sons used it for many farm chores. In 2011, his sons surprised him by restoring that tractor back to its original state. Lawrence was delighted by his “new” tractor and proudly drove it in the Prairie Village Parade. Two events in Lawrence’s life brought him great pride and honor. He participated in the SD Honor Flight on Veteran’s Day, 2010 in Washington, DC. He spoke often of the trip and how dearly he appreciated the opportunity to visit the WWII monument and other sites. In addition to that trip, he was honored for his service by his local Legion and Governor Daugaard on Memorial Day, 2012. Lawrence was very proud of his military service during WWII.Grateful for being loved and influenced by their father are five children, Larry of Loves Park IL, Marvin (Jackie) of Winfred, Janet (Loren) Struble of Huron, Roger (Marletta) of Madison, and Bruce (Sharon) of Mesa AZ; 12 grandchildren, Cindy Eldred, Becky White, Randy Eich, Michelle Bunker, Justin Eich, Lance and Derek Struble, Austin and Paul Eich, Sara Wardner, Bryan Eich, and Kimberly Giltner. Also sharing in his love are 20 great-grandchildren, Emma Eldred, Braden, Delaney, and Helena White, Jenna Bunker, Dylan Andersen, Derrick, Conner and Carson Eich, Holden, Madeleine, Cord and Keegan Struble, Charlotte, Elena, Adelaide, Kyler and Presley Eich, and Tyler and Logan Wardner. Lawrence is also survived by two brothers, Clarence of Slayton MN, and LaVerne (Myrtle) of Rapid City SD. He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Irene; his parents, Matt & Dora; his sister, Dorothy; his brother, Nobert; his son, Dean, and his daughter-in-law, Janet. - Weiland Funeral Chapel
