Description	:	WINSLOW -- Irene Marie Cowan, 97, of Winslow died Monday, June 20, 2005, at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Elmer S. Cowan who passed away Feb. 25, 1988. Irene was born in Waterville on June 16, 1908, a daughter of Napoleon and Albina (Gauthier) Poirier. She was educated in Waterville Schools and was employed by the Waterville Steam Laundry, Lockwood Mills and several local restaurants. Gram Cowan crocheted and knitted for all the family, making beautiful doilies, christening dresses and many pairs of mittens. But her favorite hobby was watching the... Read More	WINSLOW -- Irene Marie Cowan, 97, of Winslow died Monday, June 20, 2005, at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Elmer S. Cowan who passed away Feb. 25, 1988. Irene was born in Waterville on June 16, 1908, a daughter of Napoleon and Albina (Gauthier) Poirier. She was educated in Waterville Schools and was employed by the Waterville Steam Laundry, Lockwood Mills and several local restaurants. Gram Cowan crocheted and knitted for all the family, making beautiful doilies, christening dresses and many pairs of mittens. But her favorite hobby was watching the Red Sox games and playing bingo. Irene's family would like to give special thanks to the Nursing Staff on the second floor and to 3A at Mount St. Joseph for taking such good care of her. Irene was predeceased by a son, Reginald Maheu; two daughters, Cherryl Cowan and Carmen Poulliout; two grandchildren, Beverly Poulliout and Lee McCaslin; three brothers, Francis, Lionel and Roland Poirier; three sisters, Helen Labranche, Alyce Hebert and Cecile Bouthot. She is survived by two sisters, Theresa Blake of Oakland and Pauline LaRochelle and her husband, Donald, of Waterville; four daughters, Priscilla Maheu, Beverly Pelletier and her husband, Donald, Norma McCaslin all of Winslow and Elizabeth Smith and her husband, William, of Pahrump, Nev.; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at St. John the Baptist Church, Winslow. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville. In lieu of flowers donations maybe made to either the Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114, or St. John's School, 47 Monument St., Winslow, ME 04901.
